The San Francisco 49ers did not trade a cavalcade of draft picks to the Carolina Panthers for running back Christian McCaffrey for no reason. They knew his versatility, game-breaking ability, and nose for the end zone made him one of the top tailbacks in the NFL and he would be a big boost for San Francisco’s offense.
McCaffrey did not disappoint once he joined the 49ers during the season (10 TD in 11 games) and scored touchdowns in both of San Francisco’s playoff victories this month. He failed to find a lot of room against the Dallas Cowboys’ staunch defense last week, though, as he struggled to run for 35 yards on 10 carries and turned six catches into only 22 yards. Part of the problem might have also been that McCaffrey was slowed by a minor calf injury that kept him off the field for some plays down the stretch and possibly slowed him down a gear.
So will McCaffrey be able to suit up Sunday afternoon in the NFL Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles? Here is the latest on his health:
Is Christian McCaffrey Healthy or Injured?
McCaffrey might be hurt, but it does not appear he is injured severely enough that it would keep him off the field this Sunday. He has been deemed day-to-day with a bruised calf and did not practice on Wednesday, but he has shown no signs that he will not be able to play. There is plenty of time between now and kickoff for things to change if McCaffrey has a setback while practicing this week, though.
McCaffrey’s injury history has been well-documented. Various injuries cost him 22 games during the 2020 and 2021 seasons and caused concern for fantasy footballers. You must proceed with great caution when it comes to his ailments, no matter how minor. If his calf problem was enough to keep him off the field at crucial junctures versus Dallas, then being worried about his well-being is warranted for this Sunday.
You will have to keep tabs on the McCaffrey situation in the days leading up to Sunday’s NFC title tilt. He would obviously be one of the highest-priced players in playoff DFS contests this weekend, and plenty of bettors will have action on whether he can score a TD, catch a certain number of passes, etc. Only time will tell if McCaffrey will be able to get out there against the Eagles, but right now it appears he will be on the field as his 49ers attempt to reach another Super Bowl.
