Veteran quarterback Cam Newton was the first overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in the 2011 NFL Draft. The former No. 1 overall pick was the Heisman Trophy winner in 2010, throwing for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns at Auburn.
Newton won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award and made the Pro Bowl in 2011. The star quarterback had 4,051 passing yards and 21 touchdowns that year. Furthermore, he had 706 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, the second-most in the NFL.
However, the veteran quarterback struggled to stay healthy later in his career. Newton played in only 51% of the games over his past three years in the NFL. Furthermore, he didn’t play last year after starting five games in 2021.

Is Cam Newton A Free Agent?
The former first-overall pick didn’t play last year and is a free agent. However, Newton is trying to get back into the NFL. The veteran quarterback threw passes at Auburn’s pro day last month.
Newton had a solid performance at the pro day, including a few impressive passes to his young brother Caylin Newton. However, will Newton return to the NFL in 2023?
Which Teams Will Sign Cam Newton?
While Newtons believes he is still a starting-caliber quarterback, the veteran said he’s willing to be a backup in the right situation. The former No. 1 overall pick said he would be a backup for 12 quarterbacks, including Justin Fields, Jalen Hurts, and Aaron Rodgers.
Most of the teams he mentioned already have an established backup quarterback on the roster. However, the two more likely landing spots are the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens. Both teams have a star quarterback on the roster. Yet, the backup role is questionable at best.
Cleveland has Deshaun Watson entering his second year with the team. While they signed Joshua Dobbs in free agency, he has limited NFL starting experience. Newton would give the Browns an established veteran who can start if Watson misses time with an injury or suspension.
Meanwhile, Baltimore placed the franchise tag on Lamar Jackson this offseason. However, the two sides haven’t worked out a long-term contract. Therefore, Jackson’s availability for this season is up in the air. Furthermore, Tyler Huntley has been the backup for the past few years. Yet, he is a restricted free agent and struggled to replace Jackson last year.
Whether with the Browns or Ravens, Newton would provide the team with a quality backup quarterback with plenty of starting experience.
