The Los Angeles Rams have struggled to find a consistent running back since Todd Gurley’s prime years. However, Cam Akers has flashed potential. The young running back was the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Unfortunately, the former Florida State star had an up-and-down rookie season. He had 145 rushing attempts for 625 yards and two touchdowns. However, Akers was outstanding during the playoffs. The rookie had 46 rushing attempts for 221 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s two playoff matchups.
Following his strong playoff performance, fantasy players were excited about Akers’ potential in 2021. Unfortunately, the young running back tore his Achilles during the offseason and missed most of the year. The Rams had Darrell Henderson Jr. on the roster but traded for Sony Michel right before the start of the 2021 season.

What Did Cam Akers And Sony Michel Accomplish In 2022?
After spending the 2021 season with Los Angeles, Michel signed with the Miami Dolphins in the offseason. However, he didn’t make the final roster. Instead, the veteran spent 10 games with the Los Angeles Chargers, totaling 36 rushing attempts for 106 yards.
Meanwhile, Akers had a rocky 2022 season. He spent part of the year in Sean McVay’s doghouse. The former Florida State also asked for a trade but never received it. However, the young running back played better after the Rams waived Henderson. Akers ended the season with 188 rushing attempts for 786 yards and seven touchdowns, all career highs.
Is Cam Akers Or Sony Michel The Rams RB1?
Earlier today, the Rams welcomed Michel back to Los Angeles. The veteran running back joins Akers, Kyren Williams, Zach Evans, and Ronnie Rivers in the backfield.
Some believe the return of Michel is bad news for Akers’ fantasy value. That’s nonsense. Last year the veteran couldn’t beat out Myles Gaskin for a roster spot in Miami. Furthermore, he struggled to earn touches in the Chargers’ backfield.
Michel is far from being the team’s RB1 this year. He has to beat out Williams, Evans, and Rivers for snaps. Furthermore, the veteran is more likely to get cut before Week 1 than make the final 53-man roster.
Now that Akers is nearly two years removed from his torn Achilles, fantasy players should expect the former Florida State star to have a breakout season in 2023.
