Veteran running back Cam Akers was the 52nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He had a productive college career, totaling 586 rushing attempts for 2,874 yards and 27 touchdowns in three years at Florida State. Unfortunately, his NFL career has been derailed by injuries.
Akers was part of a split backfield as a rookie, missing three games because of injury. However, he ended his rookie season playing well, especially in the playoffs, leading many to believe that the young running back would have a featured role in his sophomore year. Unfortunately, Akers suffered a torn Achilles during the 2021 offseason.
While he rushed his way back from the injury for the Rams’ Super Bowl appearance in the 2021 season, the former Florida State star was never the same after tearing his Achilles.

Is Cam Akers a Free Agent?
After spending the first three years of his career in Los Angeles, the Rams traded Akers to the Minnesota Vikings early in the 2023 season. The veteran running back had a limited role for Minnesota, totaling 38 rushing attempts for 138 yards and one touchdown in six games. Unfortunately, Akers tore his Achilles for the second time in three years.
Therefore, fans weren’t surprised when the Vikings declined to offer the running back a new contract this offseason. Instead of placing a cheap, restricted free agent tag on Akers, Minnesota allowed the veteran to hit the open market without making an offer.
The Vikings declined to offer RFA tenders to RB Cam Akers and DT Khyiris Tonga, among others. They're now free agents. Thus (begins and) ends my RFA coverage for this offseason.

Top Landing Spots for Cam Akers
While his time with the Vikings is over, Akers is working hard to get back in the NFL. He is recovering well and has posted videos on social media showing him running routes.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a clear-cut landing spot for the veteran running back. Most teams won’t even give him a training- camp invite after tearing his Achilles twice over the past three years. However, the best landing spot for Akers is the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Jaguars lack a proven No. 2 running back behind Travis Etienne Jr. If Akers is healthy, he could earn that role with only Tank Bigsby and D'Ernest Johnson on the roster. The veteran won’t become a star but could earn enough volume to be a solid contributor for fantasy teams.
