Brock Purdy, one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league, is slated to make $985,000 in the 2024 season, tied for the 65th-highest salary in the NFL among QBs this year and lower than players like Hendon Hooker, Sam Ehlinger, Will Grier, and Cooper Rush.
Purdy, who finished the 2023 season fourth in the Associated Press MVP voting, will likely receive a well-earned massive contract extension sometime soon -- however, it won't be for another year.

The NFL's collective bargaining agreement states that drafted players who sign their basic rookie contracts cannot be eligible for an extension until after completing their third season in the league. Per Article 7 section (k)(i) of the CBA regarding rookie compensation, "A Rookie Contract for a Drafted Rookie may not be renegotiated, amended or altered in any way until after the final regular season game of the player’s third contract year." Interestingly, in the same article of the CBA, "A Rookie Contract for an Undrafted Rookie may not be renegotiated, amended or altered in any way until after the final regular season game of the player’s second contract year." Strangely Purdy could have been a much more wealthy man today if he was not Mr. Irrelavent in 2022.
When Will Brock Purdy Get A New Contract?
We know that Purdy cannot even negotiate his contract status for another 12 months at this point, but the larger context in which these negotiations take place is a more valuable discussion for us as fans and for the San Francisco 49ers as a team. Given the team's overwhelming talent and limited spending to give to that talent, the most valuable thing about Purdy is the size of that contract, and realistically, that size will become significantly less valuable in one year.
If you are analyzing what the 49ers are going to do in this draft, look at their key potential free agents in 2025
Brandon Aiyuk
Jauan Jennings
Aaron Banks
Dre Greenlaw
Mooney Ward
Deommodore Lenoir
Talanoa HufangaWR and CB are two positions to really watch. LB sneaky honestly

This does make negotiations for pending 2025 free agents like Brandon Aiyuk, Charvarius Ward, and Dre Greenlaw tricky. As of this writing, the 49ers have the third-lowest cap space in the 2025 season and know that Purdy will likely transition from a ridiculously small contract to a ridiculously large one. Purdy will likely make north of $40 million in average annual value, meaning the window for the 49ers may very well close after the 2024 NFL season.
