12-year veteran quarterback Andy Dalton is set to join the fifth team of his career as he agreed to a two-year $10 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. Carolina just traded up to the No. 1 overall pick for a massive haul of picks and players, so they're clearly targeting their signal-caller of the future in the 2023 NFL Draft.
However, the team might want Dalton to begin the season as the starter while serving as the mentor to whomever quarterback they zero in on at pick 1. Dalton has 166 games of NFL experience and could be a great aid for a rookie QB.
Is Dalton the Panthers' QB1 for 2023? Let's dive in.

Andy Dalton Career Review
In 162 starts, Dalton has posted an 83-77-2 record, completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 38,150 yards, 244 passing touchdowns, and 144 interceptions. He started 14 games for the New Orleans Saints last year and posted a career-high 66.7 percent completion percentage, tossing 18 touchdowns to nine interceptions.
He is viewed as at least an average quarterback and isn't often the reason teams lose games, but his ceiling is capped as an NFL starter. That said, he's a perfect bridge QB and mentor.
Is Andy Dalton The Panthers' Starting Quarterback in 2023?
It will be a long time before we know who the Panthers' Week 1 starter is, but it would make sense to let Dalton run the offense while his eventual replacement gets up to NFL speed. However, most No. 1 overall picks get to start right away, so it's far from a guarantee.
If the Panthers shoot for the sky with Anthony Richardson, he could probably benefit from sitting behind Dalton for at least a few weeks. If the Panthers take CJ Stroud or Bryce Young, they'll likely run the offense on opening day.
Either way, Dalton should be rostered in deep Superflex or two-QB leagues until we know for sure what the plan is. In those formats, getting a few starts out of a cheap-to-acquire QB is valuable.
