Horse For The Course: PGA DFS Course History - 2024 World Wide Technology Championship

Todd McGill's DraftKings, FanDuel PGA DFS picks for the 2024 World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante. Picks for daily fantasy golf based on course history

We are officially on the back half of the fall tournament schedule with three events left. The Tour is traveling south for the next two events, starting this week in Los Cabos, Mexico for the World Wide Technology Championship.

El Cardonal at Diamante is the site that will play host to this championship for a second consecutive year after the longtime Mayakoba venue moved to the LIV circuit in 2023. So, please keep in mind that this article will be limited to a one-year sample size for course history.

Horse For The Course is an article highlighting players in this week's field with elite course history and is part of our free PGA DFS content here at RotoBaller. 2024 World Wide Technology Championship

It is the second time this championship will be held at El Cardonal at Diamante, a Tiger Woods design that was well received last year en route to Erik Van Rooyen dusting the field on Sunday with a final round, 63.

The tournament itself has been a PGA Tour stop since 2007 and was the first tournament held by the premier tour in Mexico. Its original date in late February was an alternate event to the match play tournament, but it has been a mainstay in the fall since 2013.

Lots of fireworks should be expected around this par 72 layout that boasted a 68.993 scoring average last year. So for anyone who likes seeing these pros take scores as low as possible, this tournament should be on your TV radar this week.

The Course: El Cardonal at Diamante

Par 72 - 7,452 Yards | Greens: Paspalum | Designed By: Tiger Woods

As the first course designed by 15-time major champion, Tiger Woods, El Cardonal at Diamante holds a significant place in the world of golf. It is also the first TGR Design to host a PGA Tour event.

While its position on the schedule is insignificant to most of the world's top players, it is a popular tournament for the locals in Los Cabos. Wide fairways and greens that are 25% larger than the tour average make for easy scoring conditions as long as players can navigate through the blustery winds that are often present.

The layout can create big moves on the leaderboard coming down the stretch with three of the six par-4s over 480 yards being met during the last 5 holes, and the two remaining holes being par-5s. And if there is anything Tiger Woods is good at, it's giving us fireworks on the golf course.

Recent World Wide Technology Championship Winners

  • 2023: Erik Van Rooyen (-27)
  • 2022: Russell Henley (-23) (At El Cameleon Golf Club)
  • 2021: Viktor Hovland (-23) (At El Cameleon Golf Club)
  • 2020: Viktor Hovland (-20) (At El Cameleon Golf Club)
  • 2019: Brendon Todd (-20) (At El Cameleon Golf Club)

The Horse

Erik Van Rooyen

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('23)

It's hard to argue with the only winner this course has seen, especially considering the dominant fashion in 2023. After starting the week with a mediocre -4 under, 68, he caught fire with rounds of 64-66-63 to close out the week and claim his second PGA Tour victory.

His performance this fall has been hit or miss, as the South African has been riding a hot putter (averaging +0.85 strokes gained putting over his last three starts) but struggling mightily in the ball-striking side of things.

The Ponies

Carson Young

  • Notable Finishes:  9th ('23)

Things have been slow for Carson Young in 2024 with solid finishes being hard to come by. However, they haven't been difficult to find in Mexico and comparable layouts over the last 12 months.

He finished in solo ninth here last year and followed up that finish with a T8 at the Mexico Open in February. The 29-year-old also finished T11 at the Black Desert Championship a few weeks ago, which plays similar to El Cardonal.

Nate Lashley

  • Notable Finishes: T10 ('23)

Things have been trending up for Nate Lashley over the fall swing, as his most recent T16 finish at the Zozo Championship is his highest finish in six months. Statistically, his game has been volatile at best but he's figuring out ways to make weekends.

Lashley touts a top-10 finish at this event in 2023, and his game is trending in a direction that he may be able to produce a similar result this time around with continued success with the irons and putter

Matt Kuchar

  • Notable Finishes: T2 ('23)

I never thought I would be able to include Matt Kuchar in this article in 2024, but here we are. The 46-year-old has parlayed several tournament finishes together over the last half of this season. Boasting an average of +0.585 strokes gained on approach over his last 10 events.

He came up two shots shy of winning this event last season, and if a one-year sample size means anything, Kuchar should be a name to watch this week.
