Henderson Alvarez is set to return to the Marlins lineup Sunday, May 17th and against the Atlanta Braves after being activated from the DL. Alvarez hasn't started since April 12 since he experienced inflammation in his throwing shoulder and elbow.
Tom Koehler (2-3 with a 4.39 ERA), was originally supposed to start Sundays game but will be pushed to the bullpen in order to make room for Alvarez and shore up the teams bottom third (24th) ranked bullpen. After some rest and rehab, Alvarez threw one minor league start in High-A where he threw six shutout innings with four strikeouts just to get back on track.
Alvarez so far posted a 4.50 ERA which is way up from where he finished last year at 2.65. Last year Alvarez was one of the Marlins' best starters, who earned the right to be the opening day starter this year and is looking to get back on track against the Braves.
The Marlins are in the midst of a 10 game home stand, which is great news for Alvarez. In the last 3 years, Alvarez has posted an awesome 1.6o ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 7 wins in 14 starts at home.
