It took a while but the Los Angeles Dodgers finalized the trade they’ve been looking for with the Miami Marlins, except the Atlanta Braves also got involved with the two teams.
The Dodgers acquired pitcher Alex Wood from the Braves along with pitcher Mat Latos and first baseman Michael Morse from the Marlins. They also received top prospect Jose Peraza and pitcher Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan and Bronson Arroyo from the Braves.
Atlanta will receive highly touted Cuban infielder Hector Olivera, Paco Rodriguez and Zachary Bird and a compensation draft pick from the Marlins. Olivera is the big pickup for the Braves in this three-way deal because the 30-year-old signed a six-year $62.5 million deal with the Dodgers just two months ago.
Miami acquired pitchers Kevin Guzman, Jeff Brigham and Victor Araujo, and will also save around $18 million on the contracts of Latos and Morse.
The Dodgers are all-in for the 2015 season. Wood is 7-6 with a 3.54 ERA, and is a proven pitcher during his three-year MLB career. He’ll help fix the back end of the Los Angeles starting rotation along with Latos.
The former Marlins pitcher isn’t having his best season with a 4.48 ERA but has had his ERA in the 3.15 area throughout his seven-year career. Latos has a 2.96 ERA in seven starts since returning from the disabled list in early June and has been outstanding over his past three starts, with a 1.80 ERA over that stretch.Morse could be a bench player for the Dodgers.
