ANALYSIS: Giants' right-handed rookie Hayden Birdsong did it again. After whiffing 12 Rockies last week, the hard-throwing youngster posted another eight strikeouts last night as he picked up his second straight win.

The 22-year-old now has three wins in six starts this season for the Giants. He lowered his ERA to 2.97 and piled up 38 strikeouts in just 30 1/3 innings.
Birdsong is locating his 97 mph fastball well and using a big curveball to keep hitters off balance. He looks like the real deal and while there will surely be some growing pains yet ahead, he has some serious potential to become a front-end starter in the league.
Two match-ups with the Rockies may help him pad his strikeout stats, but Birdsong is legit and gets another pretty solid strikeout matchup with the Reds in his next start - though it will also be a bit riskier for run prevention as he has to face them on the road in the very hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark.
He's a solid addition in leagues of any size. The Giants could get Alex Cobb back in the rotation, but Jordan Hicks could be the guy who loses his spot and heads to the bullpen - Birdsong's spot in the rotation feels like it's locked up, and Blake Snell could still even get traded if the Giants want to sell at the deadline.
