At 19 years old and hailing from Caracas, Venezuela, Gleyber Torres is the Chicago Cubs’ lone top 50 prospect on Baseball America’s top 100 prospects of 2016 list. In his first full season of minor league baseball last year, he slashed .287/.346/.376, picking up 140 hits and 64 RBI. While the numbers are solid, especially at 18 years of age, there are a couple of issues for Torres at the moment. Firstly, he posted these numbers mostly playing at the Single-A level, with some High-A experience. Torres isn’t remotely close to being ready for the majors, in fact, there's still a chance he never even makes it. It’s simply too early to tell. Secondly, and probably more importantly, he’s a shortstop. Even if he was to improve to such a level where he could be making the Chicago Cubs in 2017, he’s got Javier Baez and Addison Russell ahead of him. Torres is still raw, playing a position where his team is currently stacked in. He simply isn’t an option now, or at any point in the foreseeable future.
