The San Francisco Giants placed LHP Jeremy Affeldt on the 15-day DL with a left shoulder strain, according to CBSSports.com.
Affeldt couldn’t record an out during Thursday’s appearance against the San Diego Padres. He might have been pitching hurt because in less than 24 hours later, the Giants placed him on the DL with the left shoulder strain.
The 36-year-old veteran has done his part in a successful Giants bullpen since 2009. Affledt was in the bullpen during the Giants' three World Series titles in five seasons.
In 2014, he had a stellar 2.28 ERA in 62 appearances. It was his second best season with the Giants. In 2009, he finished 28th in MVP-voting with a 1.73 ERA in 74 appearances.
He’s been one of the mainstays late in the game over the last six years. In 33 appearances in 2015, it’s been a different story than year’s past. Affeldt has a 5.96 ERA. The time off could help him down the stretch of the season. Michael Broadway will take his spot in the bullpen.
San Francisco will take on a well-hitting Colorado Rockies team over the weekend.
