Back To Business At The Top
The top half of the table bears a regular look with Bayern Munich leading the pack with a clean record of eight wins. They were not without some tense moments, but the quality at the disposal of Pep Guardiola is such that they look capable of wriggling out of any problems.
Following the leaders is a group of teams closely stacked together and led by Borussia Dortmund on 17 points. Schalke is on 16 points while three teams are tied on 14 points behind them.
Galloping Bayern
Guardiola puts so much into planning any game that even when Bayern win easily, it is pleasing to watch. The holders started the season with a 5-0 thumping of Hamburg SV. But, wins over Hoffenheim and Augsburg were littered with nervous moments. However, the hunger in the side is still guiding them domestically and the squad seems to be eager to stamp their authority.
Bayern improved as the games went by and the icing on the cake has to be the 5-1 thrashing of Dortmund. Using Robert Lewandoski as a real ‘number nine’ and not the usual ‘false nine’ is reaping rich benefits for Guardiola. Unless the schedule and injuries hit the squad hard, Bayern look like an unsurmountable mountain for others to climb over.
Punching Contenders - Dortmund
At the start of the season all eyes were on Dortmund as they entered the post-Jurgen Klopp era. The venerable Thomas Tuchel seems to have injected a much needed dose self-confidence to the title contenders as the ghosts of last season's first-half seem well and truly buried.
Dortmund started well with a run of five victories, however two consecutive draws and a heavy loss to Bayern pulled them back by some much-needed points. The break couldn’t have come at a better time for the Die Schwarzgelben as Tuchel can now plan to get back to winning ways and hope that Bayern slip up some time. Never say never!
Surprise Package
Without a shadow of doubt, the surprise package of the season thus far has to be Ingolstadt. Playing in the Bundesliga for the first time in their history, the Bavarian club doesn't look out of their depth at all. Their only blips have been a heavy 4-0 loss to Dortmund in the second round and another narrow loss at home to Hamburg SV, which halted their progress slightly. However, their away form is impeccable with three wins and one draw and currently in sixth spot with 14 points they look good to surprise the analysts, provided the squad can stretch itself and stay healthy.
Disappointment
When Borussia Monchengladbach qualified for the Champions League through a third place finish last season, it was hailed as the club's greatest moment. However, it has all gone downhill so far this season. Starting with five defeats, it looked like they were feeling the weight of their own expectations. Though they hauled themselves off the bottom with three consecutive wins after that, Monchengladbach has a long way to go to even match last season's success.
Although Bayern look to be setting a pace that no other team can match, there is considerable interest in how the others perform. There is still a lot to play for in what promises to be another exciting season.
