It's not easy to roster boom-or-bust players in fantasy. As a matter of fact, they are such a headache to roster because you never know when the right time to start them is.
However, if fantasy managers can play them at the right time, it pays off. Just look at Gabe Davis last year. He had nine games under 5.5 PPR fantasy points but also had five games over 20 PPR fantasy points. Fantasy managers just have to hope the boom weeks come at the right time.
So, which boom-or-bust players should fantasy managers take a gamble on in 2024? Let's dive in and find out.

QB: Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the biggest boom-or-bust player at the position. There were weeks last year when Tagovailoa looked unstoppable and put up over 25 fantasy points. Then, there were other games where he struggled to put up 10 fantasy points.
Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa is in the building for the start of Dolphins OTAs, per source. The QB is slated to become the next quarterback to receive a big payday, but the sides are in negotiations. Tagovailoa said he was planning on attending the workouts.

Last year, the 26-year-old finished with less than 10 fantasy points in three of the final seven weeks of the season. But he is a player to target in fantasy because of his high ceiling in a top offense. Tagovailoa had multiple games of at least 300 passing yards and two touchdowns in 2023.
RB: De'Von Achane, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane is another boom-or-bust player whom fantasy managers need to target this upcoming year. Some might stay away from Achane in drafts because of the crowded running back room that he is a part of. As a result, there could be some rough fantasy days from him in 2023.
However, he is a player who can get 25 points on any given week. The 22-year-old played in 11 games last season and scored over 20 fantasy points in five of those contests. That's why Achane is worth the gamble in fantasy in 2024.
WR: Christian Watson, Green Bay Packers
Health is the biggest thing holding back Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson. He has played in just 23 games over his first two NFL seasons. Nonetheless, he is worth a shot in fantasy this season, given his upside and boom potential in Green Bay's offense.

In his 2022 rookie season, Watson had a four-game stretch from Week 10 to Week 13, where he averaged 24.8 PPR fantasy points. Then, last year, he scored over 20 points in back-to-back games in Week 12 and Week 13. If he can stay healthy in 2024, there's a strong chance he can emerge as a fantasy WR2, especially with Jordan Love throwing him passes.
TE: Kyle Pitts, Atlanta Falcons
It's been a rough couple of years for Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts in fantasy. He finished as the TE33 in 2022 and the TE13 in PPR formats in 2023. Most importantly, though, he became extremely hard to start because fantasy managers never knew what type of Pitts they were getting that day.

However, things will be different for the young tight end in 2024. That's due to the arrival of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. Cousins should immediately boost Pitts' fantasy value and make him a more consistent fantasy option. He should be on every fantasy manager's radar in drafts.
