Lost amidst the free agent signings and veterans at the top of Chicago’s pitching rotation is Kyle Hendricks, the 26-year-old who’ll be pitching in only his third season in the majors in 2016. His first two years weren't exactly extraordinary, but there have been signs of fantasy value. He became a solid late-season pickup in 2014, going 4-0 with a 1.69 ERA that August. Last year, however, he struggled, pitching to an underwhelming 8-7 record. A major reason for this drop in success was his BABIP, which jumped up to .296. One thing to point out, however, is that his strikeouts were a big improvement, with his K/9 rate jumping from 5.27 to 8.35. While his ERA ballooned up to 3.95, his FIP was a solid 3.36. Kyle Hendricks is not going to be the ace of this pitching staff, or even a top three option. He figures to be a solid fourth starter, and with a significant improvement in the strikeout department, expect him to improve in his second full season. Currently projected to be drafted in the later rounds, Hendricks might not be a must-draft, but he could turn out to be a solid option for a last pick, or one of the best pickups during the season in case of injury.
