Fight Night 95: MMA Main Card Predictions and DFS Picks

MMA has one of the best sweats in DFS. Two fighters compete at a time with only one coming out as the winner. It's the best feeling in the world when you are watching the main event of a show and know you need a first round knockout to win the entire tournament.

And nothing feels worse than when you need a first round knockout by Stipe Miocic to win thousands of dollars in a tournament, but when he lands that knockout punch, you realize that you placed 14th because Jacare Souza was too dominant in a previous fight. This was a serious scenario that I had to live through when Miocic won the Heavyweight Championship.

Anyway, Jason and I will be taking a look at the main card for Fight Night 95. We will be keeping track based on picking winners and losers. We will also predict how the fight will be finished, but that will not reflect in the records.

Justin's Record: 38-15

Jason's Record: 30-23

Without anymore waiting, here are our picks and analysis for the main card at Fight Night 95.

Godofredo Pepey vs Mike De La Torre

Justin’s Pick

Pepey is one of the most exciting fighters in the UFC to watch. He’s extremely unpredictable, as he has already won fights with a flying knee and a flying triangle choke. He gets a matchup against Mike De La Torre, who loves to stand and throw. Pepey is coming off a tough lose against Darren Elkins, who is one of the best grinders in the UFC. That isn’t the type of fighter that De La Torre is, which will work in favor of Pepey. Ultimately, De La Torre and Pepey will throw for a little before Pepey ends the fight with a flash knockout.

Godofredo Pepey via TKO, 1st Round

Jason’s Pick

Godofredo “Pepey” Pepey is definitely one of the most electric fighters in the UFC, but electricity does not always win fights. Mike “El Cucuy” De La Torre will come in with a gameplan, but it is tough to gameplan around someone that uses such out-of-the-box techniques. Ultimately, Pepey has the slight advantage. It is rare, but the element of surprise will have an impact in this fight. I do not think this will be so cut-and-dry, like Justin, but Pepey will find a way to win, even if the first two or three flash knockouts do not work.

Godofredo Pepey via Submission, 2nd Round

Thiago Santos vs Eric Spicely

Justin’s Pick

Santos and Spicely are both coming off tough loses. Santos has only lost to top talent in his last few fights, and he was on a four-fight win streak before losing to Gegard Mousasi. Spicely suffered the first loss of his career, as he was submitted by Sam Alvey, who has found his groove recently. Spicely is an elite submission artist, while Santos is an elite striker. Santos has serious power in both his punches and kicks, and that could cause problems for Spicely. While I do believe Spicely has good potential in his career, he’s unlikely to be able to take Santos to the ground, which will result in the second loss of his career.

Thiago Santos via TKO, 1st Round

Jason’s Pick

This is simply a bad matchup for Eric “Zebrinha” Spicely. Thiago “de Lima Marreta” Santos is out of his league in terms of power and finishing ability. Spicely needs to get this fight to the ground, and that is not going to happen. He is not going to be able to stand with Santos, and this should result in a very exciting knockout. This is one of the easiest fights on the card to predict. Barring a major mistake on Santos part, he will start his winning streak this Saturday.

Thiago Santos via TKO, 1st Round

Francisco Trinaldo vs Paul Felder

Justin’s Pick

This is an interesting matchup. Trinaldo is coming into this fight with six consecutive wins, and he has looked outstanding recently. Felder has been able to get back on track recently after two tough losses to two solid opponents. If Felder can keep his distance and use his spinning attacks, he’ll have the advantage over Trinaldo. On the other hand, Trinaldo has to work his way close to Felder and wear him down in the clinch. Trinaldo has displayed the ability to wear opponents down with power punches, clinch work, and takedowns. This is the most likely scenario to play out, and Trinaldo will be able to outpoint Felder in this fight.

Francisco Trinaldo via Unanimous Decision

Jason’s Pick

If Francisco “Massaranduba” Trinaldo can get his hands on Paul “The Irish Dragon” Felder, he is going to win this fight. Unfortunately for Trinaldo, Felder knows this already. He is going to keep his distance, and the longer he keeps his distance the more likely it is that he hits Trinaldo with a very powerful knockout punch or kick. Felder defends takedowns rather well, and he is going to out strike Trinaldo on his feet. As long as he does not get put up against the cage, he should be able to work his way to a finish.

Paul Felder via TKO, 3rd Round

Roy Nelson vs Antonio Silva

Justin’s Pick

Both of these fighters are nearing the end of their careers, and they have been on losing skids recently. The only difference is that Nelson has proven that his chin can still hold up. He was hit with a few huge shots by Derrick Lewis, but that wasn’t enough to knock him out. Silva, on the other hand, has been knocked out in five of his last seven fights, and he has fought fighters with much less power than Nelson. While Nelson has been fighting extremely conservatively recently, his game plan will likely be to attack Silva’s glass jaw. This will be Silva’s last fight in the UFC after Nelson knocks him out.

Roy Nelson via KO, 1st Round

Jason’s Pick

Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva deserves quite a bit of respect for his impressive UFC career, but Justin is likely right. This could very well be his last fight. Roy “Big Country” Nelson has a ton of knockout power, and he rarely losses when fighting against another knockout fighter, especially a fighter with the chin of Silva. This should be a very entertaining main card fight, as these fighters are going to throw until one of them goes down. The more likely scenario is that Nelson remains standing at the end of the fight.

Roy Nelson via KO, 1st Round

Renan Barao vs Phillipe Nover

Justin’s Pick

This is Barao’s fight to lose. He has been skidding recently, but Nover is a giant step down in competition from fighters like T.J. Dillashaw and Jeremy Stephens. Barao has the takedown defense to keep this standing, and he has a huge edge in striking. He should have no problems picking Nover apart for fifteen minutes, as he works his way back into the win column. He’s one of the safer fighters on this card, as Nover doesn’t have the finishing capability to stop Barao, and he’s highly unlikely to be able to beat him on the judge’s scorecards.

Renan Barao via Unanimous Decision

Jason’s Pick

This should be an easy fight for Renan “The Baron” Barao. Phillipe “The Filipino Assassin” Nover simply does not have the finishing ability that is necessary to defeat someone like Barao. Barao will keep this fight standing, and he is going to out strike Nover on his way to a decision victory. He does have some finishing potential, but even if he does knockout Nover, that will not change the outcome of this fight. Barao is going to win, plain and simple.

Renan Barao via Unanimous Decision

Cris Cyborg vs Lina Lansberg

Justin’s Pick

Until someone actually defeats Cyborg, there just isn’t a real reason to pick against her. She has dominated everyone and anyone in her path, as she has won 16 consecutive fights. She has stopped six of her last seven opponents in the first round, as well. Lina Lansberg has been impressive in her career, but she has not fought anyone nearly as powerful as Cyborg. There’s a reason Cyborg has a -885 finish prop this week. She will be able to handle Lansberg with relative ease.

Cris Cyborg via TKO, 1st Round

Jason’s Pick

Justin is correct. Yes, Ronda Rousey was undefeated, much like Cyborg, and she was defeated by Holly Holm, but Holm had elite kickboxing talent. Lina Lansberg is not going to be able to stop Cyborg. She is going to finish her in the first round without a problem. This is the easiest fight on the card to predict. There will be a few people who claim that Lansberg defeats Cyborg only to say that they said it, if it were to happen, but the chances are so slim that it isn’t even worth it. This fight, at least according to Vegas, was over before it even started.

Cris Cyborg via KO, 1st Round
