Josh Allen Injury Update
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen (shoulder) was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday's practice after it was previously reported that he was limited with a shoulder injury he aggravated in last Thursday night's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. All signs point to Allen taking more of a maintenance day on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old superstar QB initially injured his right shoulder in a Week 6 win over the New York Giants, but he hasn't missed any time and should be fine to play this Sunday night on the road in Cincinnati against the Bengals. Allen is the top-scoring fantasy signal-caller through eight weeks and should remain in all starting fantasy lineups in Week 9.
Patrick Mahomes Injury Update
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (hand) is no longer experiencing flu-like symptoms, but he's still on the Week 9 injury report due to a left-hand injury that limited him in practice on Wednesday. Mahomes was under the weather in Week 8 and had one of the worst games of his career in the upset loss to the division-rival Denver Broncos. He turned the ball over three times (two interceptions, one fumble) and didn't find the end zone at all.
We'll keep a close eye on his hand injury, but it doesn't appear serious enough to keep him from playing in Germany in Week 9 in a showdown against the Miami Dolphins. In what is expected to be a high-scoring contest, Mahomes will have a great chance to rebound as the elite QB1 that he is.
Deshaun Watson Injury Update
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson (shoulder) went through what looked like a normal early-practice throwing session on Wednesday. He waived off the backups a couple times for extra throws and didn't appear to be restricted in any way during the period open to the media. The Browns officially listed Watson as limited as he tries to return from a right rotator-cuff sprain that he aggravated in Week 7.
He was inactive in the Week 8 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. If Watson ultimately isn't cleared later this week, P.J. Walker would get another start against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9. Watson has already missed three games with his shoulder injury and hasn't exactly been fantastic when he has played. It's something that he could be dealing with the rest of the year.
Kyler Murray Injury Update
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (knee) practiced fully on Wednesday. Murray practiced fully last week, as well, as he works his way back from a torn ACL suffered during the 2022 season. The Cardinals are reportedly still deciding whether they want to start Murray or Clayton Tune against the Cleveland Browns heading into Week 9.
Either way, it appears that Murray is close to making a return to the field so he should be stashed in all leagues moving forward.
Justin Fields Injury Update
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields (thumb) remained out of practice on Wednesday ahead of the Week 9 contest with the New Orleans Saints. Fields has not played since the Week 6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings due to a dislocated thumb. In his absence, undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent has completed 70% of his passes for 477 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in three games. He has also rushed for two scores.
With Field unlikely to return, Bagent is trending toward making his third straight start. The Saints have surrendered the sixth-fewest fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season, so Bagent remains off the fantasy radar.
Daniel Jones Injury Update
New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll said that quarterback Daniel Jones (neck) is practicing on Wednesday and is good to go heading into a Week 9 game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Jones has missed the last three games but was cleared for contact on Sunday and is trending toward making his return in Week 9. Backup Tyrod Taylor (ribs) also suffered a rib injury in the Week 8 overtime loss to the New York Jets that sent him to the hospital for the night.
The 26-year-old Jones hasn't looked great this year, but he should be an upgrade over Taylor now that he's moving past his neck injury. The G-Men have a good matchup against the Raiders defense this week, but Jones coming off injury should be considered a midrange QB2, at best, if he's active.
Matthew Stafford Injury Update
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (thumb) will not be placed on Injured Reserve, according to head coach Sean McVay. Stafford suffered a UCL sprain in his right thumb in a Week 8 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, which forced him to exit the game early.
He is considered day-to-day and while he missed practice on Wednesday, McVay told reporters they will give him up until kickoff on Sunday to determine if he can play in Week 9. The Rams have a bye in Week 10, so it makes sense to rest their veteran QB this Sunday and give him an extra week to heal up while Brett Rypien starts against the Packers. Fantasy managers should look elsewhere for a QB streamer this week.
Kenny Pickett Injury Update
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett (ribs) was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and will start in Week 9 on Thursday Night Football against the Tennessee Titans. Pickett suffered a rib injury just before halftime in a Week 8 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and was replaced by Mitch Trubisky. Initially, it seemed like Pickett was a long shot to play on a short week but he enters TNF with no injury designation.
The second-year QB is completing just 61% of his passes this year, throwing for 1330 yards to go along with five touchdowns and four interceptions. While he hasn't been great, he is a much better option under center for Pittsburgh's skill players than Trubisky.
