Patrick Mahomes Injury Update
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Monday that quarterback Patrick Mahomes (ankle) "worked hard on the treatment and is doing OK" after suffering a high-ankle sprain in the Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. When asked about Mahomes' status for the AFC Championship against the Cincinnati Bengals, Reid said he's "gonna play" and that this isn't as serious as the ankle injury Mahomes suffered in 2019.
It's unknown if the 27-year-old will practice on Wednesday, but we wouldn't be surprised if he does very little in the leadup to Sunday's big game. Mahomes is one of the best QBs in the game when fully healthy, but his mobility will absolutely be compromised against Cincinnati if he actually ends up suiting up.
Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Update
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (foot) had X-rays on his injured foot on Tuesday, and the head coach would be very surprised if Garoppolo made it back on the field this week. The Niners all along had been holding out hope that Jimmy G could make a return if they made a deep playoff run. But the 31-year-old signal-caller hasn't played since Week 13 because of a broken left foot, and rookie Brock Purdy has done nothing but impress and hasn't lost a game since taking over under center.
Even if Garoppolo was fully healed, it would be a huge surprise if Shanahan benched Purdy at this point. Josh Johnson should continue serving as Purdy's backup in the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday.
