Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Update
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (concussion) was evaluated for a concussion following the Sunday Night Football loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3. On Monday, he officially entered concussion protocol. It remains to be seen if he'll be ready to play against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4.
If he's out, Brian Hoyer would presumably be the starter, and Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers would likely have lower floors. Neither Garoppolo nor Hoyer are high on the fantasy radar in single-quarterback leagues. Fantasy managers in superflex leagues might want to consider picking up Hoyer just in case he draws the start.
Mike Williams Injury Update
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams (knee) suffered a torn ACL in the Week 3 win over the Minnesota Vikings and is out for the rest of the season, an MRI exam confirmed, according to a source. It didn't look good when Williams needed help getting off the field in Minnesota on Sunday and then was carted to the locker room with a towel over his head. The team's and fantasy managers' worst fears have been realized, and now they'll be without him for the rest of 2023.
The biggest beneficiary will be Joshua Palmer, who caught four of seven targets for 66 yards and his first touchdown of the year in Week 3. Fantasy managers that have Williams or are looking for a wideout should make Palmer a high waiver priority this week. Rookie first-rounder Quentin Johnston will also be thrust into a bigger role immediately.
Derek Carr Injury Update
New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr (shoulder) exited the Week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers with a shoulder injury. According to Katherine Terrell, Carr has an AC joint sprain and is considered week to week. The 32-year-old signal-caller has completed over 65% of his passes for 636 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions this year and looked to be headed toward a third straight win to begin his New Orleans career. The team blew a 17-0 lead after his exit.
In his absence, veteran quarterback Jameis Winston will start for New Orleans. He has upside with a supporting cast of Chris Olave, Michael Thomas, Rashid Shaheed, Juwan Johnson, and Alvin Kamara (returns in Week 4), but the Saints will likely be unwilling to let him throw a ton of passes thanks to his well-documented turnover issues. Expect the Saints to lean on its running backs and defense while Carr is sidelined.
Aaron Jones Injury Update
Green Bay Packers running back Aaron Jones (hamstring) missed the game against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, as he did the Week 2 game against the Atlanta Falcons. However, head coach Matt LaFleur said he would have been a limited participant in practice on Monday if the team took the field. The Packers play on Thursday Night Football against the NFC North rival Detroit Lions, and it sounds like he has a shot to suit up for the first time since Week 1.
If he's active, he's virtually a must-start option despite any workload management concerns. AJ Dillon has been ineffective in his increased role. Since the game is on Thursday, fantasy managers will know his status in the next few days and should be ready to make the proper adjustment to fantasy lineups.
Bryce Young Injury Update
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young (ankle) missed the team's Week 3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with an ankle injury. According to head coach Frank Reich, his status for the Week 4 contest with the Minnesota Vikings is uncertain early in the week. The rookie struggled in Weeks 1 and 2, completing under 60% of his passes for 299 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He is averaging a putrid 4.2 yards per attempt.
That said, he is not on the fantasy radar in single-quarterback leagues, and his return to the lineup could be a downgrade from Andy Dalton for wideouts DJ Chark and Adam Thielen. Check back later in the week for further updates on Young's status.
Brandon Aiyuk Injury Update
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder) was seen participating in practice on Monday. The Niners aren't required to release an official injury report this week until Wednesday, but it's a good sign that Aiyuk is back on the practice field after he was held out of last Thursday night's win over the New York Giants due to a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 2.
We'll have a better idea of whether he has a shot at returning in Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals later in the week after the team holds a few more practices. In the first two games of the year, Aiyuk caught 11 of his 14 targets for 172 yards and two touchdowns and will remain a big part of San Fran's passing attack when he's healthy.
Deebo Samuel Injury Update
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel (ribs) was not seen at the team's practice on Monday. Samuel took a hard shot to his ribs in last Thursday night's blowout victory over the New York Giants, so his status for Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals is somewhat in question. The 49ers won't release their first official injury report for the week until Wednesday, so we suggest fantasy managers check back then for an update.
The 27-year-old could miss more practice time this week, but it remains to be seen if he's truly in danger of missing Sunday's game. With Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder) missing last Thursday's game, Deebo went off for six catches (12 targets), 129 yards and his first touchdown of 2023.
David Montgomery Injury Update
Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (thigh) was listed as a limited practice participant on the team's estimated injury report on Monday after they went through a walkthrough. Montgomery didn't play in the Week 3 win over the Atlanta Falcons, but it seems as though he'll have a chance to return after missing just one game for a Week 4 matchup against the division-rival Green Bay Packers this Thursday night.
In the 26-year-old's absence on Sunday, rookie Jahmyr Gibbs saw 17 carries for 80 yards, with Craig Reynolds and Zonovan Knight backing him up. Montgomery's return would cap the upside of Gibbs, who has so far been a disappointment for fantasy managers expecting RB1 upside in his first NFL season.
