Fantasy Football Dynasty Watch: Quarterbacks
E.J. Warner, Temple (42-59, 486 yards, 3TD at Houston)
One week after Houston gives up nine passing touchdowns and another on the ground to SMU's Tanner Mordecai, they let another relative unknown go berserk. I say relative because he's a freshman...and you know his dad. His dad was the quarterback of the Greatest Show On Turf in the late 90's-early 2000s.
Warner is a little undersized by today's standards at just 6'0, and he needs to bulk up a little from 190, but still...he's a freshman. He knows the NFL from hanging around his dad. Many were predicting Warner would take a step in the next year or two, but it turns out all that he needed was a date with Houston. This is a guy to keep an eye on. I know some of you are in psychotic super-dynasty leagues where you can draft underclassmen. Maybe you shouldn't wait another year on Warner.
Honorable mention: Drake Maye, North Carolina; Bert Emanuel Jr., Central Michigan
Fantasy Football Dynasty Watch: Running Backs
Eric Gray, Oklahoma (25 carries, 211 yards, 2TD at West Virginia)
Sometimes I really must question what in the hell Jeff Lebby is doing. I know he likes to throw, but when Gray was doing what he did, there is no reason for him to only have 25 carries since he didn't get hurt. Oklahoma screwed around and, as per usual, lost the game. You can't blame it on Gray though.
I've been waiting to see this for a couple of years now. Gray was phenomenal in his freshman year at Tennessee but transferred in the time of the pandemic. He found himself behind Kennedy Brooks and Rhamondre Stevenson. Gray is delivering on that promise that he showed at Tennessee this year. He's fast, can make plays in the passing game, and is hard to bring down. Gray isn't one of the more talked-about backs in this class, but he has the talent to stick in the league as part of a committee.
Honorable mention: Zach Charbonnet, UCLA; Mohamed Ibrahim, Minnesota
Fantasy Football Dynasty Watch: Wide Receivers
Josh Downs, North Carolina (11 receptions, 154 yards, 3TD at Wake Forest)
That's four straight 100-yard games for Downs and 37 receptions and six touchdowns in the last three games alone. It took a bit for him and freshman Drake Maye to get on the same page, but now, Downs is showing why he was a Biletnikoff finalist in the preseason.
Downs is only 5'10", but he has great speed and even better hands. He helped Carolina seamlessly make the transition from Dyami Brown to him last year and from Sam Howell to Maye this year. Downs projects mostly as a slot receiver right now, but slot receivers can still make it big in the NFL nowadays.
Honorable mention: Jalin Hyatt, Tennessee; Zay Flowers, Boston College
Fantasy Football Dynasty Watch: Tight Ends
Ben Sinnott, Kansas State (7 receptions, 89 yards, 2TD at Baylor)
Sinnott was the invisible man with Adrian Martinez as the quarterback. He was far too valuable blocking for Martinez in his designed runs to be doing crazy things like catching passes. With Will Howard as the quarterback, Sinnott has hauled in ten of his 22 passes in the last two games. He is still developing his game, but Sinnott flashed the receiving ability that could make him valuable in the NFL. His blocking hasn't been in question.
Honorable mention: Cade Conley, Central Michigan
