Just spent a few days--on assignment, as we journalists like to say--in Vegas.
Sadly, we didn't have even a moment to place a bet at a--legal--sports book. Too bad. We think we might have made some coin on a few of the teams in our rankings for this week.
With no gambling wins to drown our sorrows in, here's our Top 10 as of September 18, 2017 (with won-loss records in parentheses).
NCAA College Football (CBB) Rankings
1. Alabama, (3-0)
The Tide are as safe a bet as there is in college football, albeit not necessarily a lucrative one, since they are favored to win more often than not. Sure, QB Jalen Hurts had his best game of the season (248 passing yards, 103 rushing yards), but it was wideout Calvin Ridley (92 yards, 1 TD) who finally came out of the shadows.
2. Penn State, (3-0)
Placing a bet on the Nittany Lions this week would have been like shooting fish in a barrel. Georgia State did hold Saquan Barkley to less than 50 years rushing, so Barkley showed off his receiving skills, grabbing 4 passes for 142 yards.
3. Oklahoma, (3-0)
QB Baker Mayfield threw for 300 yards (331, actually)--again. But it was sophomore wide receiver Marquise Brown (6 catches, 155 yards, 1 TD) who was the breakout star against Tulane. Bet on the Sooners to win again next week, when their opponent will be a very beatable Baylor.
4. Clemson, (3-0)
Taking Clemson at Louisville would have been a great bet. Would have been. QB Kelly Bryant (316 passing yards) outplayed the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, in the Cardinals' Lamar Jackson.
5. USC, (3-0)
The Trojans, and QB Sam Darnold, struggled to beat Texas--at home, no less. If only we had taken the Longhorns and the points. Darnold threw 2 picks--again. However, junior wide receiver Deontay Burnett finished with 8 grabs for 123 yards and 2 TDs.
6. Oklahoma State, (3-0)
If you played the under on QB Mason Rudolph passing for 500 yards, you won. Barely. The future Jets QB (?) threw for 497 yards and 5 TDs against Pitt. He'll face a tougher test this weekend against TCU.
7. Washington, (3-0)
The Huskies didn't play Derek Carr's Fresno State. Or even David Carr's Fresno State. QB Jake Browning did complete 19 of his 22 passing attempts, though. Now, if he does that against Colorado this weekend...
8. Wisconsin, (3-0)
The Badgers traveled to Provo and made the BYU Cougars look like kittens. And freshman back Jonathan Taylor had 18 carries for 128 yards, and a TD.
9. Georgia, (3-0)
With Florida State idle, Georgia makes what could be a brief appearance in our rankings. No, we're not sold on the Bulldogs, but we do like running back Nick Chubb (16 carries, 131 yards, 2 TDs). Still, we see Mississippi State knocking them out of this spot this week.
10. Ohio State, (2-1)
Michigan struggled a bit, so we're keeping our money on the Buckeyes at this point. We begrudgingly admit that Urban Meyer is a good coach. We're not ready to admit that about Jim Harbaugh yet.
