With the college football regular season over, college hoops takes center stage from now until the meat of the bowl season.
This is also the time of year when the conference schedules get into full swing and we begin to see how the top teams stack up against top competition. Will the freshmen who were fabulous against out-of-conference opponents still be flying high into the new year?
Here are our CBB rankings for the week of December 12th (won-loss records in parentheses).
NCAA College Basketball (CBB) Rankings
1. Villanova, (10-0)
Guard Josh Hart (19.5 PPG) is no fabulous frosh. He's a super senior, which means he should be on your NBA fantasy radar for next season. He's always been a great college player, but he's been bolstering his NBA creds by scoring the ball more this season.
2. Duke, (10-1)
It's hard to call the Dukies a surprise team, but not many people thought they'd get off to such a hot start. Make no mistake, though, Coach K's team is for real and we expect them to continue their hot streak through the ACC slate.
3. Kentucky, (9-1)
John Calipari prepares players for the next level, so look for forward Edrice Adebayo in a couple of years. The big frosh is already scoring (12.5 PPG) and rebounding (8.0 RPG) at a big-time level, and his body is already NBA-ready.
4. North Carolina, (9-1)
What a shock, it looks like the ACC will come down to Duke versus UNC, as if that never happens. Justin Jackson (16.4 PPG) is emerging as the next star in Chapel Hill.
5. Kansas, (9-1)
Bill Self's team scored a big win over a former Big 8 rival in Nebraska, but the real sign that the Jayhawks are poised for a deep run will be how they handle the current Big 12 schedule.
6. Creighton, (10-0)
The Bluejays keep winning and Marcus Foster (17.8 PPG) keeps scoring. Will they have enough to compete with the likes of Villanova in the Big East?
7. Gonzaga, (10-0)
The 'Zags' Zach Collins (10.0 PPG) isn't a big scorer but he has a sweet stroke (69.4% FG%).
8. UCLA, (10-0)-0
Somethin's, uh, Bruin in Westwood. Steve Alford's team has six players averaging in double figures, and if they keep winning, they'll move up in our rankings for sure.
9. Baylor, (8-0)
The Bears have been idle since our rankings for last week, so it would be hard to punish them for failing to play.
10. Louisville, (9-1)
We're holding our noses and putting the Cardinals back into our Top 10. Rick Patino's team isn't the most exciting one to watch (at least on the court), but they pile up the stats that count (meaning: Ws).
