Like the late great Dr. King, we have a dream--although it is far less ambitious (or important).
Really, we just want to get my Top 10 done on time.
Here are our CBB rankings for the week of January 16th (won-loss records in parentheses).
NCAA College Basketball (CBB) Rankings
1. Kansas, (16-1)
The Associated Press still has Villanova at No. 1. The voters haven't been watching. Look, big picture, we still like the Wildcats to win it all--again. But the Jayhawks are the nation's hottest team, bar none. And Frank Mason III (20.5 PPG, 5.5 APG) may be the best all-around player in the country right now.
2. Baylor, (16-1)
Okay, the Bears lost at West Virginia, but Bob Huggins' "Press Virginia" system gives a lot of teams fits. They also bounced back nicely with a road win against a tough K-State team. For a point guard, you could do a lot worse than Manu Lecomte (12.4 PPG, 4.6 APG).
3. Villanova, (17-1)
After losing at Butler, 'Nova has beaten up on Big East foes Marquette (yawn), Xavier (at home) and St. John's (yawn). We see no reason for their current three-game winning streak to stop tonight against Seton Hall.
4. Gonzaga, (17-0)
Still undefeated. Okay, it's the West Coast Conference, but still... The Bulldogs are the ultimate college team: deep and loaded with smart players.
5. UCLA, (18-1)
We've kind of gushed about the Bruins all season. But Bryce Alford is shooting 46.8%--from 3-point range. Yowsah.
6. West Virginia, (15-2)
Defense wins championships. Huggins keeps his players fresh by giving 10 guys regular minutes. It's not good for fantasy stats, but it seems to work in the "real world."
7. Creighton, (17-1)
The Bluejays could bomb against Xavier today, and we'd still like them, if for no other reason than point guard Maurice Watson, Jr., (13.4 PPG, 8.8 APG).
8. Kentucky, (15-2)
Don't look now, but these Wildcats have won five in a row. And, freshman Malik Monk is making it look easy in the SEC, averaging 21.8 PPG.
9. Florida State, (16-2)
The Seminoles are another deep team, with 11 guys getting regular minutes. They drop a bit in our rankings as a result of a loss at UNC.
10. Oregon, (16-2)
With a 14-game winning streak, the Ducks are the hottest team west of Lawrence, Kansas. And star Dillon Brooks (13.6 PPG) still has yet to get his game together this season. The Ducks have five guys averaging in double figures in scoring--so what's not good for the goose (Brooks) is good for the gander. Sorry.
