Corbin Carroll Injury Update
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll left Thursday's loss to the New York Mets early with an apparent right shoulder injury. Carroll took an awkward swing on a pitch from Carlos Carrasco in the seventh inning and promptly grabbed his right shoulder.
The trainers came out right away and he left the game before finishing his at-bat. This is significant because it's the same shoulder that forced him to miss a few games last week. The team should provide an update at some point on Friday but Carroll should be considered day-to-day for now. There's a good chance that the D-Backs shut him down for the next three games before the All-Star break.
Tommy Edman Injury Update
An MRI exam on St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman's (wrist) injured right wrist didn't show any structural damage. Edman is encouraged after having the scan, although he missed Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins after being scratched on Wednesday. The 28-year-old felt pretty intense pain in his wrist while taking batting practice before Wednesday's game, but it appears he's avoided a serious injury.
There's a chance that he could return this weekend against the Chicago White Sox, but the Cardinals could also choose to hold him out before next week's All-Star game as a precaution. Edman has been an everyday player for St. Louis and is currently slashing .237/.303/.391 with seven home runs, 29 RBI, 14 stolen bases and 44 runs scored. He remains day-to-day and should avoid the injured list.
Dansby Swanson Injury Update
Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson (heel) was out of Thursday's lineup after he suffered a left-heel contusion on Wednesday and left the contest prematurely, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
Swanon's been a decent provider with the bat across 83 games this season, slashing .258/.343/.409 with 10 home runs, 41 runs, 36 RBI, and four stolen bases. Fantasy managers can expect Patrick Wisdom to get more playing time until the former Atlanta Brave returns. The slugger is batting just .193 but has gone deep 14 times across 58 games.
Jose Altuve Injury Update
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (oblique), who was placed on the 10-day injured list on Thursday, said the MRI exam on his left oblique revealed relatively good news, showing something more minor than he presumed it would be after he felt the initial pain on his swing in batting practice on Tuesday. The 33-year-old is optimistic that he can return shortly after next week's All-Star break.
It's good news for Altuve, who hasn't had great luck with injuries so far in 2023. He initially fractured his thumb while playing in the World Baseball Classic early this spring, and he's been limited to just 32 games in the first half of the season. Fantasy managers will be hoping the eight-time All-Star will stay on the field much more in the second half. Until Altuve returns, Mauricio Dubon will continue to see regular playing time at the keystone in Houston.
Ketel Marte Injury Update
Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte (back) was back at the keystone and hitting second in the batting order on Thursday against the New York Mets and right-hander Carlos Carrasco. Marte has been held out of the lineup a few days this week due to lower-back pain, but he entered as a pinch-hitter late in Wednesday's game and stayed in the contest to play defense at second base.
Fantasy managers will want to get the 29-year-old Dominican switch-hitter back in their starting lineups immediately. He's currently hitting .284 (87-for-306) with 15 long balls, 13 doubles, four triples, 44 RBI, six stolen bases and 61 runs scored in 80 games played. He's hit .271 (13-for-48) with five homers, a double, 13 RBI and 11 runs scored in his last 13 games.
Ke'Bryan Hayes Injury Update
The Pittsburgh Pirates reinstated third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes (back) from the injured list Thursday. Roansy Contreras was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Hayes had been out since June 28 with lower back stiffness.
The 26-year-old hit against Dodgers southpaw Julio Urias in Thursday's game. He is slashing .254/.290/.397 with five home runs, 32 RBI, 34 runs, and eight stolen bases over 303 plate appearances in 2023. Fantasy managers with daily moves can safely insert Hayes into their starting lineups moving forward.
Austin Hays Injury Update
Baltimore Orioles outfielder Austin Hays (hip) remains out of action on Thursday against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. It will be the fourth straight game that Hays has missed due to a bruised left hip, but manager Brandon Hyde said that Hays could be back in the lineup any day now.
With only three games remaining before next week's All-Star break, though, the O's might just decide to give the 28-year-old some extra rest heading into the second half of the season. Hays only has eight home runs and two stolen bases, but he's been valuable in fantasy for his batting average of .312 (87-for-279) in 76 games.
Riley Green Injury Update
Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (leg) will play in the outfield in a minor-league rehab game with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, and he could return from the 10-day injured list this weekend. Greene is attempting to return from a stress fracture in his left fibula, and he's gone 5-for-9 so far in his first two rehab games for Toledo.
The 22-year-old second-year player will return to starting center-field duties for the Tigers when he's deemed fully healthy, and he should be rostered in all fantasy leagues for his ability to contribute in multiple categories. Before his injury, Greene was slashing .296/.362/.443 with an .805 OPS, five home runs, nine doubles, three triples, 18 RBI, six stolen bases and 29 runs scored in 52 games.
