Fantasy Baseball Injury Report - Updates on Josh Lowe, Gleyber Torres, Gunnar Henderson, Grayson Rodriguez, Jose Ramirez, Trea Turner, more

josh lowe fantasy baseball rankings draft sleepers waiver wire MLB injury new

Dave Funnell's fantasy baseball injury report for Week 1 (2025). Injury updates for Josh Lowe, Gleyber Torres, Gunnar Henderson, Grayson Rodriguez, Jose Ramirez, Trea Turner, more.

Welcome, RotoBallers, to my fantasy baseball injury report for March 30, where every week we look back at the major injury developments in the world of baseball and look ahead at what might transpire as a result. Today, we look at recent injuries and updates for Josh Lowe, Gleyber Torres, Gunnar Henderson, Grayson Rodriguez, Jose Ramirez, Trea Turner, and more.

Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game, but how you handle them can mean the difference between a last-place finish or somewhere near the top of your league's standings.

The hope is that, whatever comes your way, you can understand what the injury is, what it means for your fantasy team, and what actions should take place. Let's get right to this week's injury-related news.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball lineup tools and resources:

Josh Lowe, OF, Tampa Bay Rays

Heading into the season, Josh Lowe was looking for a reboot after scuffling through an oblique injury last season. In an unfortunate turn of events, it would appear that those concerns were re-aggravated as on Friday, he injured himself while swinging a bat. He exited the game with an obviously disgruntled look on his face.

Afterward, he told the media that this injury felt like it was in a different place, somewhere closer to the rib area. However, as he said here, he's swung at this type of pitch many times before, and the injury is almost as inexplicable as it is frustrating.

He was officially placed on the 10-day Injured List yesterday and will not return for quite a while. He was diagnosed with a Grade 2 oblique strain, which is more severe than his prior ailments. The team has said he will miss weeks, and a strain this severe could mean a two-month absence. Not only is this a recurring injury, but it is an area of the body that can be unpredictable, where pain lingers.

In his absence, the Rays do have options. Within the season opener, Kameron Misner related the injured Lowe and wound up hitting the game-winning home run. At age 27, he is a journeyman of the minor leagues, so it's hard to imagine any sort of breakout here, but as a left-handed hitter at Steinbrenner Field, there could be some inexpensive upside.

Eloy Jimenez has had success in the past and could rejuvenate his career in Tampa Bay. In addition to this, highly-touted prospect Chandler Simpson may also get a chance to shine, bringing an intriguing amount of speed to the table. It is advised to see what the move is once the Rays place Lowe on the Injured List, as that will tell them their plans.

Gleyber Torres, 2B, Detroit Tigers

Another player looking for a revival of sorts is Gleyber Torres, who gambled on himself in free agency and signed a short-term deal to prove his worth to the world. After a failed final season in New York, he was looking to show the world that he could be the player he once was and be worth the time and money he would be looking for next offseason. Unfortunately for him, while hitting a home run on Friday, he injured himself on the swing.

It was noted afterward that he had been dealing with rib cage pain for a few days, and it was this swing that emphasized that discomfort. As someone who has had no past injuries in his ribs and obliques, this really does qualify as one of the more fluky types of ailments that are as unpredictable as they are frustrating. Torres will be slow-played back into the lineup, as the team wants to be careful with him.

Upon exiting the game, Javier Baez moved himself to second base, as he has a plethora of middle-infield experience. Additionally, Andy Ibanez had 44 appearances at second base last season, while Zach McKinstry had 18 appearances there, too. Both players could find themselves with an uptick in playing time, but neither of them is a formidable option there long term if Torres misses time.

Finally, Colt Keith, who was the team's primary second baseman in 2024, is currently slotted in as their first baseman. That could very well change, given the flexibility and versatility that most of their lineup has. Manager A.J. Hinch loves to move players around to different positions, and that likely won't change here if Torres goes to the Injured List. In other words, there may be an opportunity for more consistent playing time, but it doesn't seem likely that anyone emerges as an elite option, given the choices here.

MLB Injury News Quick Hits

Guardians' third baseman Jose Ramirez jammed his wrist on a stolen base attempt, which led to it being diagnosed as a sprain. Manager Stephen Vogt announced that he is currently listed as day-to-day, and his status moving forward depends on how he feels later today. Chances are that he misses some time, but it's not clear if that time will be on the Injured List. Of note, Gabriel Arias entered the game as his replacement at third base, and he may be the team's new starting third baseman. If not him, Daniel Schneemann could also see an uptick in playing time.

Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales suffered a non-displaced left ankle fracture this week and will miss time on the Injured List. He will see a foot specialist in the meantime to determine what can and should be done to help treat the issue. Given that there is a breakage and that a specialist is required, this could be an extended absence. In his absence, Adam Frazier should get the bulk of the playing time, while prospect Nick Yorke could get an early call back to the Pirates as well.

Orioles starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez not only played catch on Friday but also threw a side session in the bullpen prior to their game in Toronto. This is a significant progression, as prior to this, he had only played catch, which is at the beginning stages of a pitcher's ramp-up. That being said, he still has a long way to go, and Baltimore would be wise to take the route of caution when building him up.

It was announced that Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers would not be playing third base at all this season, even on days when Alex Bregman doesn't play. While this wasn't presented in a way that would suggest a lingering injury, it is something to monitor, given his early-season struggles at the plate.

Boston starter Brayan Bello will begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday as he attempts to return from a shoulder injury. He missed all of Spring Training after injuring it while attempting to ramp up. The hope is that this assignment will be short-lived, with only a handful of starts before he can be inserted into the rotation. Consider Richard Fitts a feasible streaming option in the meantime.

Tanner Bibee missed his Opening Day start for Cleveland due to food poisoning but is scheduled to make his season debut later today against the Royals. Fantasy owners are advised to check their rosters to ensure that he is active.

Gunnar Henderson began his rehab assignment on Friday and finished the game 1-for-3 with a hard-hit single. Chances are that he will be ready to return to the Orioles once he is first eligible to do so on April 3.

Spencer Strider began his rehab assignment yesterday and looked effective over his 60 pitches thrown. While his average velocity on all pitches was slightly down, it's encouraging that he was able to do what he did in the timeline that he's been progressing. He likely has two more outings, at least, before he makes his 2025 debut for Atlanta.

Braves catcher Sean Murphy has already caught five innings' worth of action in minor league games and will begin a rehab assignment this Friday with High-A Rome. Since fracturing his ribs, he has remained on a timeline that projects him to return within the next few weeks if all goes well. Drake Baldwin continues to fill in during his absence, albeit with minimal success at the plate.

Trea Turner missed yesterday's game with back spasms. He felt something while fielding groundballs during batting practice. He hopes to return to the Nationals' lineup in the coming days, but nothing is yet known.

Washington catcher J.T. Realmuto was removed from Saturday's game for precautionary reasons with a foot contusion. X-rays on that foot were negative, as he is considered day-to-day.

Padres superstar Manny Machado exited Sunday's game with cramps in his left calf, and his status is considered day-to-day. He could return to the lineup as soon as today.

Fantasy Football Dynasty Rookie Draft: Superflex, 12-Team (2025)

Don't we all love mock drafts? I sure do. The monotony of them can get... monotonous after a while when the vast majority of them just have short, shallow write-ups of each player without giving an emphatic, helpful take on each. I hope to do the opposite. Considering how far consensus can be (and usually […]

Early 2025 Fantasy Football Mock Draft: 12-Team, Single QB

There's never any reason not to do more fantasy football mock drafts and break down the efficacy of every pick. Or so the saying goes. Sun-Tzu probably said that in The Art of War. I haven't read the whole thing, so I'm not sure. Either way, it's never not interesting to speculate on what the […]
