Buy Low and Sell High: Trade and Waiver Targets for Week 7

Are you looking to trade?  If your answer is “yes”, then the RotoBaller.com Buy/Sell Weekly Article is where to find fice players of the week to Sell High and five guys to Buy Low.

You trade for one of two reasons:

  1. You need a shortstop, have an extra third baseman and someone has as extra shortstop.  You trade a third baseman for a shortstop.  Done.
  2. You have a player who is exceeding expectations.  He is unlikely to keep it up, so you trade him for a position you need. Done

Sell ‘Em

Let's take a look at a few players who have been playing above their levels of late, such that you should consider placing them on your trading block to see whether another owner in your league will pay full price for continuing production:

  1. Shin-Soo ChooShin-Soo Choo – Choo is RED hot!  He leads the league with 34 runs, currently has 9 HR and a ridiculous OBP of .468!  He is a very tough player to let go.  However, you can find similar stats to what he should produce rest-of-season.  If someone will pay full price, take it.
  2. Chris Davis – Someone looking for some power might bite on Davis.  He has performed well, with not much to suggest he will slide all that much, but if can you obtain another need, it makes sense to divest yourself of the hottest commodity in fantasy.  Note: Davis has been on the Sell ‘Em list twice and the Buy ‘Em list as well.
  3. Alex Gordon – Gordon is a nice player who can put up some fantasy stats, however he is a career .273 hitter currently hitting .331; if you are looking to move someone, Gordon is an excellent candidate.  He only has 6 HR, so assuming his BA goes diminishes, hits and homeruns diminish as well.
  4. Clay Buchholz – On the Sell ‘Em for the second time (hopefully you didn’t sell him when we last told you to).  Buchholz is playing lights-out baseball, 60 K in 58 IP, with a 1.69 ERA.  He has ace potential, but he's a very hot-and-cold player, and he is bound to hit a cold streak soon.  Better to sell him before that depresses his value.
  5. Shelby Miller – How can you trade a guy who after over 51 innings pitched in 2013 owns a 0.88 WHIP?  He has 65 career innings pitched, and since he's not Orel Hershiser in his prime, he probably cannot keep up this absurd pace.  You can probably get a ton for Miller right now, making it as good as any time to pull the trigger.

Buy ‘Em

And of course, we've got to look at some slumping guys who you should look to pick up from their frustrated owners for pennies on the dollar:

  1. R.A. Dickey on April 7, 2013 (2)R.A. Dickey – Dickey has not yet adjusted to the AL.   66% of his starts have been quality starts, and he is still getting batters to whiff on his knuckleball.  While he will not be close to a Cy Young candidate, current Dickey owners might be wary of the switch to the AL and now is a good time to pull the trigger, especially because you may not have to give up that much.
  2. David Price – He’s performed poorly and now he finds himself on the DL; that’s a double low.  Unless the Rays fall way out of it, this team is too scrappy to give up.  I would expect that come the second half of the season, Price will light it up big time.
  3. Matt Kemp – Look, you should fully expect to have to pay to buy “low” on a talent like Kemp.  But if you have the right pieces to work a deal, do it.  He is batting a respectable .282 with 6 SB.  His 1 HR is a concern, but hey, that’s why he is on the “Buy ‘Em” side.  He will finish with better than 20 HR and over 30 SB.
  4. Yoenis Cespedes – He is in line for a monster year and he’s already putting up the numbers to prove it.  His .204 batting average is just why fantasy owners like YOU need to buy a guy like this.  He will hit 30+ HR and around 100 RBI.  You can figure out a way to afford a BA hit for production like that.
  5. Ryan Zimmerman – If you need a third baseman and have perhaps Alex Gordon or Chris Davis to pony up, do it now.  Zimmerman is “struggling” in that he only has 1 HR.  That will not remain the case; look for him to break out soon.  In his last five games he is 8-for-18 with 6 RBI.
