Quarterback Value Picks for Week 8
QB: Austin Davis ($7,500): When Brett Favre says you can be the next Tom Brady or Kurt Warner that has to be a good sign right? While he is not making Warner and the greatest show on turf worry about their records, Davis has quietly been very good. Last week he completed over 80% of his passes against the Seahawks despite only throwing for 155 yards. He has been very consistent this year with two or more touchdown passes in three of his past four games, including two games over 300 passing yards. This week they play a tough Kansas City defense but that should not worry him as he has back to back solid outings against San Francisco and Seattle.
QB: Teddy Bridgewater ($5,400): After a stellar first outing, the Vikings rookie QB has struggled in his last two games. Because of that his price has plummeted to below several backups, meaning this could be the week to take advantage and roll with the first round pick. Bridgewater has attempted at least 26 passes in each of his three starts and has averaged 3 rushes a game which does not sound great, but only adds to his value. A match-up with a Tampa defense that currently ranks 25th in yards allowed is a positive as well. He is not a great cash game play, but in a GPP he is great salary cap relief to fit in other top end players. Look for 200+ passing yards and two scores this week which will easily surpass his price.
Running Back Value Picks for Week 8
RB: Tre Mason ($6,000): Mason is the second Ram I have suggested this week, but before we dig deeper I would not advise playing both Mason and Davis this week against a solid Chiefs defense. That being said, the former Auburn standout is a solid choice this week as he burst onto the scene last week with 18 carries for 85 yards against a stingy Seahawks defense.
The team said before the game that Mason, Stacy and Cunningham would all split carries but it Mason who was the clear leader after all was said and done. Last season in college Mason was the star for a Tigers team that made the national championship game and showed why he was an early round pick. The disadvantage to Mason this week is that they may again try to find the hot hand and that he is also not a huge threat out of the backfield. However, if he is given another 18+ carries it’s hard to imagine that he wouldn't hit value.
RB: Bishop Sankey ($5,300): Another rookie running back, Sankey will certainly test your patience. The talented back was given the starters role when Shonn Greene was injured and in the last two games has ran the ball 34 times. The downside is that he has just 117 yards, 1 reception and no touchdowns in that span. The great news is that the team has also gone to rookie Zach Mettenberger behind center which likely means they will want to establish a good ground game to keep him protected. J.J. Watt and company are a good defense but a few teams have run on them this year and Sankey is another high upside play that is a cheap source of guaranteed touches.
Wide Receiver Value Picks for Week 8
WR: Allen Robinson ($6,000): After missing week one, Robinson has been one of the steadier receivers in all of fantasy football. Despite not yet having a 100 yard game, he has at least four receptions in every game and was over 50 yards in all but one of those contests. Last week he made a great play to score his first career touchdown which should only boost the confidence Blake Bortles has in him. Surprisingly, the Dolphins have the top defense in terms of yards per game allowed, but they have still allowed over 200 passing yards a game. At this price it is nice to have a near guarantee of at least 4 receptions and 50 yards.
WR: Brandon LaFell ($5,300): If you take out his one catch 20 yard stinker against Cincinnati a few weeks ago, LaFell has averaged 4.5 receptions, 79.3 yards and has three touchdowns. He has finally started to show why the Patriots signed him in the offseason and outside of Julian Edelman he is probably the top wide receiver option for the Patriots. This week LaFell faces off with a Bears defense that gives up 247 passing yards a game and has been torched deep several times. One deep reception from Brady will put LaFell over his value.
WR: Jermaine Kearse ($4,900): The shocking trade of Harvin to the Jets has certainly opened up opportunities for the receivers in Seattle. Last week it was Doug Baldwin who shined, but under the radar Kearse had 3 receptions for 50 yards. That was preceded by another 3 reception 62 yard performance. Russell Wilson has been on fire of late and a matchup with a Carolina defense that just got destroyed by the Packers is enough reason to expect a break out game from the Seahawks number two receiver.
Tight End Value Pick for Week 8
TE: Jordan Reed ($5,200): Despite back to back good games, Reed’s value has still stayed low. In those two games he has 13 receptions and 146 yards. He missed over a month with an injury, but has obviously returned to the top tight end position, moving Niles Paul down in the depth chart. In a bit of a shocker, the Cowboys are not the worst defensive team of all time, but they should still struggle to slow down Reed who will need to help out Colt McCoy with short passes. In a PPR league Reed should be a monster this week.
Defense Value Pick for Week 8
DEF: Jacksonville ($4,500): The ultimate value play, the Jags enter the week as a minimum price defense. Sure the team is currently 31st in yards allowed, but that is not something we need to worry about. The good news is that the team does have 22 sacks on the season and has a solid 40 fantasy points over the last three games. They are playing a Dolphins offense that has a good deep threat in Mike Wallace but no other playmakers that stand out. The potential for a 3 INT game is also always in the cards for the erratic Ryan Tannehill who has already had to fight getting benched this season.
