Everton has traditionally been considered on the fringes of the Champions League, but it may be getting worse. The spending of not just the new big four teams, but even teams such as Crystal Palace and Stoke City, is placing Everton in a more and more difficult position as their spending has remained relatively low key.
Always seen as a selling club, this year John Stones has emerged as a target for Chelsea. There is no certainty that Jose Mourinho will get his man, however Everton looks to be potentially exposed in central defense should this move take place.

Everton was very weak defensively last season, and Tim Howard was not at his best. He will need to return to top form if Everton are to succeed in the lower half of the table. Look for 19 year old Brendan Galloway to press for a starting place this season, as he can play at left back or in central defense.
Tom Cleverley has joined on a permanent deal, however we remain to be convinced that he will be the man to make the midfield area come to life. With Kevin Miralles remaining an enigma, and Gareth Barry and Leon Osman aging, Everton will be completely reliant on their record signing of Romelu Lukaku from last season.
Lukaku seems to have been around forever, but he is still only 22 years of age. An exceptional talent when he is in the mood, manager Roberto Martinez must hope that the forthcoming European Championships will be the driving force to push him to show his value.
Gerard Deulofeu has now signed permanently from Barcelona, and has the potential to succeed either directly up front, or from a wide position to link the attack.
Prediction: A tough season ahead with a bottom half finish.
Players to watch: Brendon Galloway (Defense), Gerard Delofeu (Striker), Romelu Lukaku (Striker)
