Suarez’s rookie season in Detroit was interesting. He was limited to just 85 games played and faced a platoon at shortstop, which limited his offensive production drastically; he hit just .242 with four home runs, 33 runs scored, 23 RBI, and a frustrating .652 OPS. While he did pop onto fantasy radars briefly in the beginning of the season, the platoon eventually caught up with him and he faded into fantasy irrelevance.
In 2015 with the Cincinnati Reds, Suarez really spread his wings. He only played 12 more games (97), which is surprising considering the Reds lost Zack Cozart after 53 games. However, Suarez was able to compile a much-improved .280 average with 13 home runs, 42 runs scored, 48 RBI, and .761 OPS. The spike in OPS is mainly due to an increased SLG (up to .446 from .336 in 2014), and we really saw the power come on at Great American Ballpark.
Eugenio Suarez will have to grow a little bit before he starts to see regular playing time, but he is still on track to improve yet again in 2016. Take a flier on Suarez in the late round if you are trying to navigate through an extremely shallow SS pool.
