ANALYSIS: Perhaps Houston didn't have Eric Gordon featuring heavily in their 2021-22 season plans, but a combination of injuries and players going through the health and safety protocols of late opened the door of the starting unit to the veteran guard. Not that the Rockets should be hating that approach, though, as Gordon has performed to nice levels and that could eventually give Houston the chance of exchanging him for a tasty couple of draft picks or young players before the deadline.
Gordon has started 17 games in a row between Nov. 17 and Dec. 23 (both included). He's done so at the point and the wing, showing good versatility and putting up numbers in all cats: 15.5 PPG (making 2.4 3PM per game), 1.5 RPG, 4.5 APG, and 1.1 stocks per game adorn his month-plus-span resume. Of course, Eric G is a shooting guard more than anything, and that clearly shows in both his scoring averages and his shooting prowess (48.9% from the field as a starter on a dose of 11.5 FGA per game) and less in his rebounding and diming.
If you need someone with bulky per-game numbers at anything-and-everything scoring, very high three-point buckets, and the odd steal, Gordon is your man. Gordon is logging 31 MPG since becoming part of the starting lineup, and that should not change even if he drops to the second unit eventually. In fact, that "secondary" role might even benefit him as he won't share the court with any substantially good player so he'd have all of the opportunities he could handle.
