ANALYSIS: Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Edwin Jackson has proudly won three straight games without allowing an earned run, most recently going 7 ⅓ innings against the Angels. Absolutely no one is buying the 2.48 ERA and 1.03 WHIP at face value, but his career-low .224 BABIP and high 80% strand rate do not jive with an elevated 23.5% line-drive rate.
There are other reasons to believe in Jackson, namely the lower walk totals (7.9% would be his lowest mark since 2013) and Oakland’s roomy park, but that only goes so far. Pitching at O.co will help Jackson maintain a lower 8.3% HR/FB rate, but this is still a guy that had a 5.21 ERA and 6.14 FIP in 76 innings pitched last season. His .156 BABIP/97% strand rate at home is quite something and will likely regress to the norm. He is worth an add but tread carefully for his next start against Houston.
