Analysis: Edwin Diaz has had a monster season, and he is finally getting proper recognition. So far in 2016 he has a 1.74 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, is allowing just 2.3 BB/9, and is striking batters out at a phenomenal rate of 16.8 K/9. The 22-year old recently was promoted to the Mariners closer spot over Steve Cishek and he has seized the opportunity. After starting the season in June with a 2.03 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, he improved to a 1.54 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in July, and currently has a 1.50 ERA and 0.50 WHIP in August; which is also the month in which he has picked up all five of his saves for the season. All in all, Diaz has struck out 17.83 batters per nine IP and walked just 1.53 batters per nine IP in the past two months. He has improved tremendously and elevated to an elite level and he has the 9th inning spotlight to match. Diaz is a must own as the season dwindles down.
