Edinson Volquez Looks to Lead KC Rotation in 2016

Edinson Volquez came over to the Royals and has taken over as the de facto number one pitcher. Volquez doesn’t have #1 stuff, but he pitches for a team that can produce runs, has a good catcher in Salvador Perez, and has a great defense behind him.

This is not to say that Volquez is helpless out there, or that he is solely a product of this Kansas City team, but there’s no doubting that his surroundings give him a great lift. He throws a 93 MPH fastball and works in a good curveball and great changeup for effect, and while his control could use some touching up, it has gotten better in the past two years (he still holds a BB/9 that is over 3).

He isn’t the type of guy who is going to work into the eighth inning often, but with the amazing Royals bullpen backing him he doesn’t need to. This also plays into how the chances are strong that if he leaves the mound in line for the W, he should get that W. If he pitches around 200 innings, he should be good for about 13 wins, 150 Ks, a 3.75 ERA, and 1.27 WHIP.
