In this article, I look around the NFL and examine some undervalued 2013 fantasy football wide receivers for your fantasy football draft, to try and uncover some draft day gems.
Early Rounds - Undervalued Wide Receivers
Larry Fitzgerald - Target round: 2, ahead of Demaryius Thomas
In my opinion, Fitzgerald is on par athletically with Calvin Johnson. The main problem with Fitz in recent years has obviously been his offense and his QB. But Arians is installing a downfield offense in 'Zona, and Carson Palmer has never shied away from throwing the ball 50+ times a game. Both are such huge upgrades over last year's situation that I can see Fitzgerald challenging Calvin for top fantasy wide receiver honors this season.
Middle Rounds - Undervalued Wide Receivers
Cecil Shorts - Target round: 5-6, ahead of Marques Colston
Why do teams throw the ball? Option A: Because a team is so skilled at the QB and WR position that they feel they have a tremendous advantage going through the air. Option B: A team is losing by so many points that the only option they have in order to make up points quickly is throw. The Jaguars are obviously going to be falling into the Option B category on a weekly basis. Throw in the fact that Justin Blackmon is going to be suspended for four weeks, and the Jaguars really only have one option. Thus, I predict that Shorts will be a top-12 receiver this year.
Late Rounds - Undervalued Wide Receivers
Kenny Stills - Target round: Late Rounds
The Saints are a team that falls into the previously discussed Option A-- skilled QB and receiver corps. Even when they're ahead, they constantly pass because it's their best option to move the chains and march down the field. Kenny Stills was a beast for the best college team on the planet last year, and is now slated to be the #3 WR for the best passing team in the world. Colston is constantly injured, and Lance Moore has never been a top-two option on a team in his life. By the halfway point of the year, I expect Kenny Stills to emerge as a top WR option (Jimmy Graham is an obvious #1) on the team that throws the most in the league.
