Trevor Lawrence
Age: 22
Movement: Just added
Previous Rank: N/A
Updated Rank: QB7
Trevor Lawrence enters the RosterWatch dynasty startup rankings as the QB7. There is a case for taking T-Law as high as QB3. Lawrence is universally considered an elite prospect, so it is easy to get excited about him in fantasy football. RosterWatch is exercising a rational process for dynasty. It is ok to get aggressive on Lawrence but it is a better bet to draft young QBs with at least a two-year resume of top-five production and contract insulation. Only Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Kyler Murray, Dak Prescott, and Lamar Jackson fit that description. We still have Justin Herbert ranked ahead of Lawrence, but that is a pick your flavor choice drafters will have to make. If training camp reports are glowing, QB7 will seem like a steal.
Justin Fields
Age: 22
Movement: Just added
Previous Rank: N/A
Updated Rank: QB8
Most experienced fantasy players who had Fields as their QB2 in the 2021 class never moved off that position. Fields did slip in the draft vs expectations from January, but Chicago traded up and stopped the fall just outside of the top-10. Fields has everything you want in a fantasy QB; elite rushing ability, requisite size and speed, and a cannon of an arm. He is a great bet to start week one. The Bears are likely regretting signing Andy Dalton in free agency. Dalton’s presence on the team should not inhibit the coaching staff and front office from thrusting Fields into the starting role right away, as they are all on the hot seat. Fields will have an elite WR in Allen Robinson to start his career. Justin Fields would be the QB1 in any draft class that didn’t have Trevor Lawrence in it.
Trey Lance
Age: 21
Movement: Just added
Previous Rank: N/A
Updated Rank: QB9
Trey Lance is going to have a polarizing startup ADP. Of the top-five QBs, many agree he has the widest range of outcomes for fantasy. Lance is also the most likely to NOT start Week 1. The situation in San Fransisco mirrors that of the Kansas City Chiefs a few years ago. The Chiefs let savvy veteran Alex Smith play out the full year since the team was in win-now mode. Kansas City let Patrick Mahomes develop before unleashing him in Week 17 that season. Jimmy Garoppolo is still a good QB who led the team to the Super bowl a short time ago. It is easy to see the 49ers sticking with Garoppolo as long as the team is winning. If Jimmy G has a three-interception game or the 49ers lose back-to-back games, the pressure from the fans will start to mount for Trey Lance. Drafting Lance at QB9 has risk, but the upside is commensurate with that risk. For those more risk-averse, you can default to Joe Burrow, Russell Wilson, or Zach Wilson.
