Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has a new head coach, and it's the former offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, Ben Johnson. Johnson led one of the NFL's most successful offenses in 2023 and 2024, and elevated his quarterback, Jared Goff, to his best career numbers.
Does that mean you should buy Williams in fantasy football, though? Or are you better off selling the hype and looking elsewhere for your QB? Williams had a terrible season if you were to eliminate the garbage-time production he put up, and often looked completely helpless commanding an NFL offense.
Let's dive into whether he's a buy or sell ahead of the 2025 season.

Should You Buy or Sell Caleb Williams in Dynasty Fantasy Football?
Right now, you're probably better off leaning toward buying or hanging on to him. There's still plenty of negativity surrounding his 2024 campaign and with good reason. But great coaches typically elevate their players, and despite Williams' deficiencies, the arm talent is there.
They really let Caleb Williams get Ben Johnson 😳

Despite the hype around Johnson, it might still be slightly underrated just how much a good coach can cover for players' severe deficiencies and construct an offense that both maximizes and elevates their strengths. Johnson has a good receiver room to work with, even if they don't bring back Keenan Allen, and he'll likely make this a run-first offense, anyway.
Goff has had the benefit of having either Johnson or Sean McVay for his whole career ... save for one season, 2021. And in that year, he played in 14 games and threw for 3,245 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, averaging just 6.6 yards per pass attempt. Hardly inspiring.
Then in three years with Johnson, he logged 4,438/29/7/7.6, 4,575/30/12/7.6, and 4,629/37/12/8.6 (passing yards/pass TD/INT/yards per pass attempt). Those were massively improved numbers. 2024's iteration of Johnson's offensive system was elite.
When you watch Ben Johnson’s offense one item that always sticks out is how he deploys motion to help create explosives in the run game.

The personnel had something to do with it, of course, but the tape revealed that BJ has a highly creative mind and designs concepts that lead to fantastic production. That's what Williams will be getting next season. It wouldn't be surprising if his numbers improved precipitously.
And last year's situation couldn't have gotten much worse from a coaching standpoint. Former Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was a terrible hire, and there have been rumors that it was even worse on the inside than it looked on the outside.
Starting QB has to beg you to watch film with him, and you won't?
Assistant coaches report they were basically told to sit in the corner and hush.
Two sides to every story, but I'm having a hard time seeing a side where Shane Waldron isn't an absolute piece of shit.#Bears pic.twitter.com/jDXDR4r4U8

It's probably worth it to at least hold onto him if you have him. Whether you should buy him fully depends on what kind of deal you're able to get, of course. But a night-to-day chance in coaching should work wonders for really everything.
Buy him if you can get a good deal and hold if you have him, but you should be very hesitant to sell.
