Drew Smyly came up with the Detroit Tigers in 2012, and the biggest issue he has faced in developing into a top-of-the-rotation starter is staying healthy. He won the fifth starter job in Detroit in 2014, but was shipped off to play with the Tampa Bay Rays at the deadline as part of the David Price deal. He managed a 1.70 earned run average with 44 strikeouts in 47.2 innings pitched before being shut down for the year. He missed most of the 2015 season due to a shoulder injury, but was solid in 12 starts-- 3.11 ERA, 77 strikeouts in 66.2 innings. Smyly grabbed a rare win in arbitration and will earn $3.75 million for the 2016 season, during which he has the potential to emerge as an ace-caliber pitcher. As long as he can remain healthy, he should easily surpass his Rotoballer ranking of No. 54 among starters.
