Favorite Targets Early On Monday
Patrick Cantlay ($9,400)
The moniker Patrick Cantlay has taken on as someone who doesn't win golf tournaments has been warranted for the last three years. However, it is the same argument I made for Xander Schauffele before his breakout season in 2024 that saw him capture multiple major championship titles.
Not all tournaments are created equally, and the narrative begins to change when we get reduced prices on DraftKings for someone who has landed 11th, fourth, 3rd and 11th during his past four chances at this course.
That doesn't necessarily mean that the win equity begins to show itself again. Still, the more significant takeaway that I like in this situation is how Cantlay has been reduced out of the $10,000 range in recent months (meaning the ceiling doesn't need to be as high), plus will be littered next to chalkier options such as Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Jason Day.
None of those golfers are bad at the most basic level of what we are discussing here for DFS, but Cantlay joined Scottie Scheffler as one of only two golfers to rank in the top 25 of all seven categories I weighed this week.
At his best, the American has always been a California/West Coast killer that thrives on Poa greens, so if yougive him a course that he loves and great lead-in form, the ceiling might start creeping up higher than most believe entering Pebble Beach.
Max Greyserman ($7,800)
Me turning into an advocate for Max Greyserman in 2025 might be the biggest turn we have seen since Shawn Michaels broke up the Rockers by hitting Marty Jannetty with some 'Sweet Chin Music' through a barber shop window.
I understand the concerns Greyserman showed at Torrey Pines when he faltered during the weekend to fall to 48th place on the leaderboard. Poa greens and a long, challenging course were why I didn't use him in DFS at the Farmers. However, we sometimes overreact as a space when it turns the industry's favorite weekly target into a borderline afterthought in Northern California.
While we are still in the early stages of Greyserman on Poa, I love that he got some challenging rounds at the Farmers. He won't be able to learn how to put purely on them overnight, but this is not quite the same course at Pebble Beach when you dive into the birdie potential and sub-6,900 layout.
I am a massive proponent of Weighted Putts Per GIR being the most impactful category for finding high-end success at Pebble. Consider that a glorified combination of ball-striking meets putting, which is why I liked Wyndham Clark last year when he landed number one in that area.
Greyserman will not find the same high-end strength as Clark did last year when we get into the nitty-gritty of the returns, but these were the top-six players in that category when I tried to dive into the hidden potential upside that a golfer may have for the week.
Denny McCarthy ($7,000), Tom Hoge ($7,300), Nick Taylor ($7,200)
You will get three popular names here that will force you to decide on playability, but it is funny because my model returned extremely robust returns for each golfer. You rarely see that for any of those options when I build a model.
As I showed above, McCarthy landed as my top Weighted GIR + Putting option. Much of that stemmed from his increased projection with his irons on similar tests and top-end marks for putting.
Hoge's course history will be pronounced no matter how you view it, with three top-12 finishes in his last four attempts here. I don't want that to hold too much weight since course history always dictates higher ownership for the public. However, the data shows precisely why Hoge has been a star here in the past, ranking second in this field for projected proximity.
And then, we get a past winner in Nick Taylor, who has started 2025 on fire by adding to his trophy collection. Taylor's top-20 marks for Pitch + Putt tournaments blends extremely well with the increased projecting projection he has shown on similar venues in the past.
Ian McNeil talked about Hoge's iron strength when discussing Justin Thomas in his RotoBaller article:
