Favorite Targets Early On Monday
Rico Hoey ($7,200)
I essentially ran a multi-functioning filter in my sheet to remove any golfer who
1. Landed outside the top 30 for the week in Expected Driving at Vidanta (there is nearly a nine percent upside increase for total driving acumen)
2. Removed anyone who didn't land inside the top 30 of my sheet for overall rank or upside.
3. Got rid of anyone outside the top 50 for Weighted Proximity or Proximity from 175+ yards.
That filter cut us down to the following names:
Rico Hoey will not be for the faint of heart because of his extremely volatile returns with the putter, but he does land next to a handful of prominent options if we are trying to find upside on the slate at a cheap ownership and price tag.
Aaron Rai ($9,400)
One of the things I believe is going to happen here for DFS contests is that the space is going to talk about 'bomb & gouge' styles over and over again and how they thrive at Vidanta, which will cause the industry to overlook one of the best players in this event when we dive into Aaron Rai's profile.
I understand that Rai lacks the driving acumen you would typically want to see for a course that has wide-open fairways and limited rough, but let's not ignore the fact that there are top-20 returns for him in key driving categories (Strokes Gained OTT: Limited Rough and Strokes Gained OTT: Similar Grass types) if you want to find a reason for him to add to his two top-25 finishes at this course in three years.
While the recent results might leave something to be desired, I don't believe this is quite the poor course fit that something such as Torrey Pines would have presented to him recently.
Alex Smalley ($8,700)
An increased projected output for Alex Smalley off the tee and approach for Vidanta will likely make him a surprisingly popular choice after reeling off three top-21 finishes over his last four tournaments.
It is worth noting that Smalley has only ever made the cut here once in three attempts, but it hasn't come from a lack of ball-striking returns, with the American gaining off the tee and approach in all three starts.
With a surge occurring with the putter for Smalley over his last five starts (+1.76 average), there are real reasons to believe that a ball-striking course such as Vidanta has all the design and makeup to be the location of his first PGA Tour victory.
Carson Young ($7,700)
A very similar answer that I expressed for Aaron Rai is bound to happen here for Carson Young.
I understand the need for length, but it shouldn't be the only thing you are looking at when building a model. There is a reason Young has provided back-to-back top-15 finishes at this course.
