Hey, RotoBallers! I want to introduce myself formally, my name is Jon Irvin. Some of you may know me from the Discord channels and know I love breaking down DFS slates, especially in the MLB and NHL. I enjoy the deep dumpster diving and look forward to helping find the low-owned, overlooked, and unwanted plays. I predominantly play on DraftKings, so some of my picks are more tailored to their point/price system but a good spot is a good spot regardless of platform.
Welcome back to the discount rack! Today's DFS content will be for the NHL Playoffs for both DraftKings and FanDuel for Monday, May 13th, 2024. We're in the thick of Round 2 action tonight with the NYR who's on the brink of eliminating CAR, as well as COL attempting to take even their series against DAL.
After reading this, jump into the RotoBaller Discord NHL channel and chat about today's slate with all the other great minds. Don’t forget to check out our valuable NHL tools, including the new NHL DFS Heat Map.
NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 5/12/24
Playoff hockey is a little different than the regular season, I shy away from specific line matching and concentrate more on players' TOI. Ultimately we are looking for the most opportunities to accrue fantasy points, those opportunities only present themselves with ample time on ice. I've been sticking more with showdowns than the entire slate which fits my style more. Don't be afraid to fade goalies in lineup construction, with the price of netminders sky-high, there seems to be too much risk for the reward. Here are a few lineups I've put together to give you an idea of how I construct things.
DraftKings and FanDuel Goalies - NHL DFS Picks
Igor Shesterkin - DK $8.2K || FD $7.9K
Opponent - Carolina Hurricanes
Now Igor is the top-priced goalie on this two-game slate but I don't care. He's your justified spend-up on shot volume alone. Carolina is about to be on summer vacation so I expect them to pull out all stops and fire at will.
Others to consider: Jake Oettinger DAL (DK $7.6K || FD $8.0K)
DraftKings and FanDuel Centers - NHL DFS Picks
Mika Zibanejad - DK $6.3K || FD $8.4K
Opponent - Carolina Hurricanes
Zib has been on a tear lately, currently running on a 14-game point streak and especially a horse on home ice. The Rangers head back to NY to attempt to close out the Canes, NY has looked superior in the playoffs with a lot of thanks going to Mika.
Others to consider: Ross Colton COL (DK $3.3K || FD $5.1K)
DraftKings and FanDuel Wings - NHL DFS Picks
Miles Wood - DK $3.4K || FD $4.7K
When taking discount wingers we need to look for consistency. Unfortunately, the TOI lacks compared to other forwards but Wood stays true to consistently finding ways to get on the boxscore. A few shots and maybe an apple is all we need for his upside to come through.
Opponent - Dallas Stars
Others to consider: Jack Roslovic NYR (DK $3.8K || FD $5.3K)
DraftKings and FanDuel Defensemen - NHL DFS Picks
For our defenseman, we're going to concentrate on Dallas. The Stars are filled with blueliners that eat up a lot of minutes and are active both in shots and blocks, let's look at the playoff TOI chart.
Chris Tanev DAL - DK $4.0K || FD $4.3K
Opponent - Colorado Avalanche
I want to highlight Tanev once again as a great value defenseman. Tanev has had at least 3 blocks in nine of the last ten playoff games, that's the consistency we always try to lock in.
Others to consider: Esa Lindell (DK $3.8K || FD $4.5K)
