We have a 12-game slate on Monday night, so the player pool options aren’t too scarce. However, only two games have an over/under of at least nine total runs. The leading matchup is PHI/COL at 10.5 total runs.
As for pitching, three games have an over/under below eight total runs. Three teams are heavy favorite (-200 odds, or greater): Nationals, Red Sox, and Indians.

Clayton Kershaw, LAD (@ ARI) - $10,100
Whenever I see that Kershaw isn’t the most expensive option, I’m instantly intrigued. I know he isn’t in the Cy Young form that we’ve seen him in before, but we know his ceiling is high. Kershaw is the fifth-most expensive pitcher on the market for Monday. He’s allowed two earned runs, or less, in nine of the past 10 appearances. On the down side, Kershaw has failed to surpass three strikeouts in three of the last eight outings. One of those games happened against the Diamondbacks on September 1st. However, on the year, Kershaw is 1-1 with a 2.42 ERA and notched 27 strikeouts in 26 innings (four starts) against Arizona.
Derek Holland, SF (vs. SD) - $8,000
I was torn between Holland and Dallas Keuchel ($300 cheaper). I went with Holland because his over/under was lower than Keuchel’s. The SD/SF matchup has an over/under set at 7.5 total runs, with the Giants as favorites. The HOU/TOR game has an over/under of nine total runs. Also, Holland has tallied at least six strikeouts in three straight games and he’s allowed two earned runs, or less, in six of the past seven starts. Plus, it helps that the Padres are on the docket. San Diego is 26th in team wOBA (.294) against lefties and second in the league in team strikeouts (1,450) this year.

C - Chris Iannetta, COL (vs. PHI) - $3,500
I feel like Iannetta is the constant go-to when looking for a catcher, but you can’t argue with the logic. Colorado has the highest implied run total on the slate (six runs) and Iannetta has the third-best ISO against right-handed pitchers (.223) since 2017. He’s also registered seven walks in the past nine games. He’ll find a way to get on base. As for Zach Eflin, the starter facing Colorado, he’s 3-4 with a 5.07 ERA on the road this season.
1B - Yuli Gurriel, HOU (@ TOR) - $4,500
Gurriel has gathered multiple hits in four straight games and is riding a nine-game hitting streak. He’s 12-for-26 (.462) with three doubles and three home runs. Gurriel has even produced 10 RBI during that span. His Astros are projected to score 5.3 runs (fourth-most on the slate).
2B - Brock Holt, BOS (vs. BAL) - $4,500
This is the must-start of the slate. Holt is 7-for-14 (.500) with one home run in the past week. He’s also 8-for-13 (.615) with two doubles and one home run against Dylan Bundy. Holt has a seven-game hitting streak and has notched at least one knock in nine of the last 10 contests.
3B - Maikel Franco, PHI (@ COL) - $4,000
Even though the Rockies are favored at home, the away team can be appealing, too. The Phillies are implied to score 5.1 runs on Monday night at Coors Field. In the past week, Franco is only 3-for-8 (.375) and he’s 3-for-10 (.300) with a home run against Tyler Anderson. Franco is currently in the midst of a five-game hitting streak, too.
SS - Lourdes Gurriel Jr., TOR (vs. HOU) - $4,000
Fun fact: This is the first time I’ve recommended two Gurriel’s in the same writeup. Toronto’s Gurriel is 9-for-28 (.321) with three home runs in the past week. This season, Gurriel is batting .314 against left-handed pitchers and only .270 to righties. As for his opponent on Monday, Dallas Keuchel, he’s allowed at least five earned runs in two of his last three outings.

Matt Kemp, LAD (@ ARI) - $3,900
The BvP users will love this play. In his career, Kemp is 7-for-16 (.438) with four extra-base hits (two home runs) against Robbie Ray. Kemp is also 5-for-15 (.333) with one double and two home runs in the past week. He’s homered twice in the last three games, too.
Matt Holliday, COL (vs. PHI) - $3,900
The week hasn’t been great to Holliday (1-for-12). However, he’s still an inexpensive way to fit a Colorado bat into your DK lineup. This season, Holliday is batting .313 against left-handed pitchers.
Kole Calhoun, LAA (vs. TEX) - $3,400
Finally, we looked towards another team with a high implied run total and fits the final piece of our $3,400 remaining salary. The Angels are projected to score 4.9 runs on Monday (fifth-most runs). Calhoun could be the leadoff batter for that lineup. Lefties are batting .280 against Adrian Sampson this season.
