Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota signed a two-year deal last during the 2022 offseason to rejoin Arthur Smith (previous offensive coordinator in Tennessee), but after a disappointing season for the veteran, he could see a change of scenery in 2023.
When Mariota was signed, most people viewed him as a bridge quarterback to serve as a placeholder after Matt Ryan was traded to the Indianapolis Colts. The Falcons drafted Desmond Ridder in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, so Mariota's job was far from secure.
Did the Falcons release Mariota and what is next for the 29-year-0ld former Heisman winner?

Was Marcus Mariota Released By The Falcons?
In 13 games, Mariota completed 184 of his 300 passing attempts for 2,219 yards, 15 passing touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He added 85 rushing attempts for 438 yards and four rushing touchdowns. The team went 5-8 during his time as a starter and the passing game never hit its stride as the ceilings of tight end Kyle Pitts (when active) and wide receiver Drake London were never unlocked. Mariota was eventually benched and stepped away from the team.
Now, the team has decided to move on from Mariota after one season, saving them $12 million against the cap. While Mariota could've earned a long-term deal if he exceeded expectations, his deal was set up to have an out after the 2022 season. Ultimately, this move was predictable when he signed, so there's no surprise factor here from Atlanta.
The team will look to make a move for a top quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft or add a veteran to compete with Ridder in his sophomore season.
What's Next For Mariota?
Assuming Mariota wants to continue his career, there should be a decent market for his services a as backup quarterback. While he likely won't be a long-term starter again in the near future, he'll be viewed as one of the best backups in the NFL.
His best-case scenario would be landing in a spot like Arizona, where he could serve as a bridge quarterback while Kyler Murray (torn ACL) recovers. However, Teddy Bridgewater and Jacoby Brissett are other notable signal-callers who could fit that role, too.
Time will tell what Mariota's next move is, but again, there will be teams interested in signing him this offseason.
