On Wednesday evening, the NASCAR Cup Series held the qualifying session for season-opening Daytona 500. Chase Briscoe, in his first official race with Joe Gibbs Racing, was the fastest and won the pole for the Great American Race on Sunday. Austin Cindric was second-quickest and will start on the outside pole.
The qualifying procedure for the Daytona 500 is different than what NASCAR fans are typically used to, as the session on Wednesday night did not actually set the starting order. Instead, it set the starting order for two Duel races on Thursday night.
The finishing results of those two races then set the starting lineup for the rest of the field for Sunday afternoon's Great American Race. The following drivers did not qualify for the race: Chandler Smith, Anthony Alfredo, BJ McLeod, and JJ Yeley.
