BALLER MOVE: Start in 10+ Team Leagues
POSITIONAL VALUE: RB2
ANALYSIS: Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has been one of the NFL's best running backs this season. In his first year with the Lions, Montgomery has rushed for at least 50 yards in 10 games. He's totaled 178 carries for 855 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging a career-high 77.7 rushing yards per game.
The one real gap in his 2023 resume has been in the receiving game, as he hasn't had more than 22 receiving yards in any game. Still, he's provided solid contributions there at times, with double-digit receiving yards in five games.
While the emergence of rookie Jahmyr Gibbs has cut into Montgomery's upside, his strong play makes him a strong RB2 option on a weekly basis. That's true in Week 16 as well, when Montgomery and the Lions take on the Minnesota Vikings.
Minnesota has been strong against the run this year, allowing the fifth-fewest rushing yards per game at 92.0, something that introduces a little additional uncertainty into his fantasy outlook. Still, Montgomery's volume and his ability to grind out yards give him a high floor, even if his ceiling this week is a bit lower than it might usually be.
