BALLER MOVE: Add in Two-Catcher Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 8% of leagues
ANALYSIS: While it is very unfortunate that Carson Kelly landed on the IL with a fractured wrist and will likely be out until after the All-Star Break, this provides another opportunity for catching prospect Daulton Varsho to adjust his bat to the MLB level. Last season, Varsho could only muster a .653 OPS, though he did have three HR and three SB in 101 AB, and he has fared even worse so far in 2021 with a steal, three doubles, and a .420 OPS in 48 AB. With a 21-55 record, the D-Backs could be quite willing to let Varsho learn on the job, especially considering his minor league performance.
In 80 AB for Triple-A Reno this season, Varsho already has nine home runs, two steals, and a .313/.368/.750 slash; and in his last minor league season with Double-A Jackson, Varsho collected 18 home runs, 21 steals, and a slash of .301/.378/.520 in 396 AB. Varsho is a blue chip prospect with defensive eligibility outside of catcher, the potential for high steals at the position, and he will have a much clearer path to playing time during Kelly's IL stint. If he gets adjusted to the majors soon, he offers high rewards, so Daulton Varsho is a worthwhile addition in two-catcher formats.
