We've switched things up a little bit in our Daily League column: Instead of giving you an exact lineup, we'll be sharing top positional plays with quick analysis about why we like these guys. There is no set budget for these picks, so they may be star-studded-- the idea here is to give you an overview of some of the best plays at each position, including some value picks and some strong matchup plays.
Strong Daily League Pitching Options for June 20, 2013:
SP: Jordan Zimmermann (vs. COL) - This home start against the Tulo-less Rockies is less intimidating on paper than the pricing for Zimmermann is giving credit for. For a #1 stud to be priced under $8K, you'd have to think something is terribly wrong. Granted, he didn't have his trademark stuff in his last outing, but look for Jordan Zimmermann to have a strong game tonight facing Roy Oswalt.
SP: Tommy Hanson (vs. SEA) - I usually don't recommend two totally different pitchers, but Tommy Hanson has been pitching surprisingly well lately, racking up 8 strikeouts in his last outing. He is the dirt-cheap option today at under $7K and facing one of the junkiest and most strikeout-prone offenses in the game (Seattle). If you need to save some money on pitching or you're playing in a larger field tourney, this may be a great play for you today.
Hitters to Target for June 20, 2013:
1B: Prince Fielder - This is one of the only times in 2013 that the big slugger's price has been under $4K! Granted, it's only slightly under, but nevertheless, the homerun ball is what wins daily league tournaments, and with limited options available today due to the short schedule, I like Fielder's chances to do some yard work against the homerun-prone John Lackey. Get him in there today and ride the Prince to king status.
3B: Will Middlebrooks - He will KILL your Roto team's batting average, but since there is no penalty for striking out three times in Daily League play and a 1-4 with a homerun is worth enough points to make you smile, we like Mr. Middlebrooks for $2700 facing a very inexperienced left-handed pitcher. There are few good choices and matchups today at the higher prices, so I say get him in there and spend bigger in the outfield.
OF: Yasiel Puig - There is no way that the hype train (or his real-life stats) have not driven his daily league price through the roof - or is there??? It seems that some sites have been slow to react, and with a value under $4K for a high-upside power-and-speed slugger, the only way that Puig should not be in your lineup against Jason Marquis is if he is on the bench for some reason. Enjoy this tear he is on, as he has been hitting near the .500 mark for close to two week now.
OF: Jayson Werth - He has been quietly hitting very, very well of late, racking up 23.5 daily league points over the past five starts (4.7 points-per-game average), and he is still priced very low with a near-$3K price point. If you need someone to fill in for a great value, take a look at the Nats' forgotten slugger today at home versus Roy Oswalt. It could get ugly very fast today in Washington, and there is a good chance that Werth will have a hand in it.
