NHL DFS Picks for Monday, January 11th
Monday night's card features four games, including a matchup of two Original Six teams, and a contest between two even with each other in the standings, already fighting for a wild card spot. It's always important to keep an eye on skaters riding point-streaks, as well. For updated confirmations of starting goalies, check out www.leftwinglock.com.
From my colleague and fellow Hockey DFS writer, Chris:
A couple strategy notes. For cash game construction look for players who can contribute to your score when they are not providing offense. Examples are guys who take a ton of shots, and defensemen who block a lot of shots (DraftKings). Also, look for guys who get powerplay time and especially Top 6 forwards. You can find value in players who join a new line due to an injury or just get a promotion and more ice time.
For large field tournaments (GPP's) you want to find payers who have multi point upside and can grab double digit fantasy points. To stack the most upside in your forwards a common strategy is to punt the defense position. This doesn't mean just grab anyone. Try and look for a D man who will be playing more PP time or might get a boost in overall playing time due to an injury.
Let's take a look at some solid plays for Monday's action.
Roberto Luongo - Goaltender, Panthers (DraftKings - $8,200 FanDuel - $9,300)
With the exception of Braden Holtby, no other netminder in the league is hotter. Luongo has won nine straight games between the pipes, and has given up more than two goals only once in that span, including two shutouts and four one-goal against performances. Luongo faces the Canucks in what should be an emotional return to the city he played in for eight seasons. He averages nearly the same amount of fantasy points in both DraftKings and FanDuel.
Karri Ramo - Goaltender, Flames (DraftKings - $7,300 FanDuel - $7,700)
Ramo has won five times in the last ten games. In his five losses, the Flames have scored an embarrassing six goals, while Ramo has given up 12. He still holds a 2.52 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Ramo will be in net against the San Jose Sharks, a team neighboring the Flames in the standings, also with 40 points on the season. Ramo will need to out-duel his counterpart Martin Jones, whose performance has been similar, despite giving up seven more goals in that ten-game span. He is a value play for both DFS sites.
Ryan Spooner - Center, Bruins (DraftKings - $4,600 FanDuel - $5,400)
With David Krejci continuing to miss action due to an upper body injury, Spooner has moved up to one of Boston's top lines, and has made the most of it. Spooner has picked up six points in five games, while tallying 17 shots on goal; a stat valuable for DraftKings. Also in that span, Spooner reached or plateaued the 4.0 fantasy point mark for DraftKings four of five times, solid for his low price.
Dylan Larkin - Center, Red Wings (DraftKings - $5,700 FanDuel - $5,900)
Larkin enters Monday's game against the Los Angeles Kings on a four-game point streak. He plays well over 15 minutes a night, and has benefited from playing on the same line as veteran Brad Richards. Larkin has been one of the Red Wings best players and sole point providers in his first year in the NHL. He owns a team and league best +23 on the season. Larkin is a smart play tournament play for both.
Kevin Hayes - Winger, Rangers (DraftKings - $3,500 FanDuel - $4,200)
In an overtime loss to the Washington Capitals Saturday, Hayes scored his first goal in over a month, and picked up his first points since the middle of December. Not exactly promising, or reassuring, I get it. But hockey is a very streaky sport, as are others, and Hayes can reclaim some of his magic from his rookie year last season against the rival Bruins. The two teams are very close in the standings which should provide for a competitive contest. Hayes gently sprinkles stats in the hits, blocks, and shots on goal categories, which benefit his value in DraftKings more so than FanDuel.
Jaromir Jagr - Winger, Panthers (DraftKings - $5,800 FanDuel - $5,100)
The 43-year old has gathered four points in three games, consisting of three goals. Jagr has been on the healthy side of +/-, especially of late, and plays on Florida's top line. The Panthers have been a pleasant surprise this season, currently in first place in the Atlantic Division, while Jagr leads his team in points. Jagr also has three power play goals, beneficial against a Canucks team that has surrendered 29, sixth most in the NHL. Jagr is a solid and smart play on both DFS sites.
Brent Burns - Defense, Sharks (DraftKings - $8,300 FanDuel - $7,000)
Any time Burns laces his skates and steps onto the ice, I want to pick him for Daily Fantasy. He has tallied 14 points in ten games, while scoring three goals in his last four. He spends plenty of time on both San Jose's power play and penalty kill, opening up more opportunities for him to produce for fantasy. He hits, shoots, blocks shots, and plays well over 20 minutes a night. He continues to be one of, if not the top defensive picks for both DraftKings and FanDuel.
T.J. Brodie - Defense, Flames (DraftKings - $4,800 FanDuel - $4,900)
Brodie is part of Calgary's impressive defensive pairing consisting of him and Mark Giordano. He has been a shot-blocking machine, collecting eight in four games, and also plays well over 20 minutes a contest. He has tallied two helpers in four games. The Flames host the Sharks who have allowed the seven most goals a game in the NHL. Brodie is more valuable in DraftKings but posted big numbers in back to back games, on both sites, in the middle of December.
