In this article, we’ll be providing you with critical lineup updates and injury news for MLB games on 4/12/16. We’ll try to update this article up until games so you have the latest information to set your daily fantasy baseball lineups on FanDuel and DraftKings.
Tuesday’s DFS slate places Jeff Samardzija in Colorado for his second start as a member of the Giants after allowing three runs on eight hits over 5.1 innings in his season debut. Samardzija hasn’t been a reliable option for some time, and if he is broken, a trip to Coors certainly won’t fix him.
We will also see Mike Wright make his season debut against the Red Sox. Wright was abysmal in a small sample with the Birds last year, and could make for an attractive stack target against bats like David Ortiz and Hanley Ramirez.
MLB Injury Updates for 4/12/16
Scott Van Slyke was thrust into an everyday role after Carl Crawford was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a back issue, but sat out Sunday's contest due to his own lower back tightness. Trayce Thompson notched a two-hit day with two RBI in his absence. There is no word on whether Van Slyke will play Tuesday, but either man could be a candidate to face left-hander Patrick Corbin. UPDATE: Van Slyke placed on 15-day DL. Trayce Thompson starts in center field.
Yasmani Grandal could make his season debut as early as Tuesday after recovering from a forearm injury. Grandal would almost certainly replace A.J. Ellis as the team's starting backstop if he is healthy enough to catch nine innings. UPDATE: Grandal Reinstated, A.J. Ellis starting.
Howie Kendrick looks poised to be yet another Dodger returning to face Corbin after recovering from a calf injury. There is no word on what happens to Chase Utley when Kendrick returns, but the 32-year-old would most likely get the nod against the southpaw. UPDATE: Kendrick reinstated, starts at second base. Utley goes to the bench.
James McCann's status is up in the air after being removed from Monday's contest with an ankle sprain. Jarrod Saltalamacchia would be the team's primary catcher if McCann needs to miss time.
One day after Ender Inciarte was placed on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury, his replacement, Mallex Smith, had to leave his MLB debut after getting hit in the face while attempting to steal second. He does not intend to miss time as a result of the injury. Smith will likely get the majority of at-bats against righties while Inciarte is sidelined, but could yield center field to Drew Stubbs on Tuesday, as the Braves will face lefty Gio Gonzalez. UPDATE: Mallex Smith returns to the leadoff spot.
Adam Jones missed his fourth consecutive game Monday against the Red Sox due to rib cage soreness, but came on in the bottom of the ninth to play defense. The fact that he was able to field may be seen as a positive sign, but he told MLB.com that it still hurts to swing. Nolan Reimold will likely continue to see time if Jones is unable to step in the batters box. UPDATE: Adam Jones remains sidelined. Ryan Flaherty will start in left field, while Joey Rickard stays in center.
Evan Gattis has looked good while recovering from hernia surgery he underwent this offseason, having notched two extra base hits (including a home run) during his rehab assignment. The Houston Chronicle reports that Gattis will be activated Tuesday. Preston Tucker would be a candidate to lose time when Gattis is reinserted into the lineup.
Shin-Soo Choo and Robinson Chirinos will both be rehabbing injuries for the foreseeable future. Nomar Mazara will lock down left field in Choo’s absence, but the starting catcher assignment could shift between Bryan Holaday and Brett Nicholas. Neither man is particularly useable for DFS.
Adam Rosales may start at third base while Yangervis Solarte is on the disabled list recovering from a hamstring Injury, but Alexi Amarista could remain in the lineup against right-hander Charlie Morton.
UPDATE: Buster Posey is a late scratch due to a foot injury. Trevor Brown will step behind the plate in his absence. Posey is not expected to miss extended time.
MLB Lineup Updates for 4/12/16
Lefty Matt Moore will take the hill against the Indians, meaning Colin Cowgill should get the start as a platoon bat. Cowgill has yet to log a hit in five plate appearances this season.
Two righty power bats in Mark Canha and Josh Phegley will likely draw into the lineup against southpaw Hector Santiago. Billy Butler should also see his name on the lineup card, while Steven Vogt, Chris Coghlan and Yonder Alonso get a day to rest.
Franklin Gutierrez could get a chance to play against lefty Derek Holland. Gutierrez is off to a slow start this season, but he notched a .317/.357/.615 batting line against southpaws last year. Korean import Dae-Ho Lee figures to get the nod at first base.
Delino DeShields sat out Monday due to poor numbers against Hisashi Iwakuma, but should return to action against left-hander Wade Miley.
Weather Updates for 4/12/16
Quite a few areas will see rain fall in the morning and early afternoon, but each is expected to have close to a zero percent chance of precipitation at game time. We also have a dome to protect us from the elements in Seattle.
