The Associated Press has reported that Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber has signed a 1 year deal for the 2015 season. According to Jeff Todd from www.MLBrumors.com, both sides were hoping to reach a multi-year deal, but apparently they could not agree on the right number.
It makes sense that the sides were unable to come to an agreement on a longterm deal. The Indians are a small market team that needs to be weary of their spending habits in order to build a contender. Kluber is 29 years old and pitched 235.2 innings last season, after having only 224.9 total major league innings pitched coming into the year. It remains to be seen how his arm will react this season to that amount of wear and tear.
On the other hand, Kluber is coming off an unbelievably dominant season. He led the AL with 34 games started while averaging 9.3 Strikeouts per 9 innings and a stifling 2.44 ERA. These numbers alone warrant a massive contract in this day an age, but the Indians clearly feel that they need so see this again to ensure that Kluber can both repeat the performance and stay healthy.
Kluber comes into this season as one of the top AL pitching options, and as long as his stuff remains the same, there is no reason to believe he won't be one of the top fantasy options again in 2015. He has great control, a mid 90's fastball, and one of the best curves in baseball. As log as his skills have not worn down after his spectacular year, he will be looking at a much larger contract a year from now.
