Analysis: According to MLB.com, LHP Cody Reed is the #3 ranked prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization and on Saturday, he made his MLB debut. He had a promising and composed start against the Houston Astros producing seven IP, four earned runs, six hits, three walks, and an especially impressive nine strikeouts for a K/9 rate of 11.6. Reed gave up all four runs on two home runs that knocked in two runs each. Considering that Reed's debut was in homer-friendly Minute Maid Park, one of the homers was knocked by slugger Evan Gattis, and Reed has a minor league career HR/9 of just 0.5 in 324 IP, the home run shouldn't be a big concern for the 23-year-old.
Reed also has total minor league figures of 59 starts, a 3.69 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 8.1 K/9, and 3.3 BB/9. His ERA, WHIP, and BB/9 are also a bit misleading. Reed had a tough first two years in the minors with ERA of 6.07 and 5.46, WHIP of 1.82 and 1.68, and BB/9 of 7.0 and 3.9. This season in the minors Reed has a 3.20 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 2.4 BB/9. Last year with three teams Reed had a 2.41 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 2.6 BB/9. He is still very young, but he is very talented and is learning very quickly on the job.
